FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Men's Swimming Team narrowly defeated Davis & Elkins 107-98 on Saturday afternoon during Homecoming Weekend for their home opening meet.
The Bobcats instantly began their day with an advantage, as they took first two places in the 200m medley relay, with sophomores Sean Filipovits and Kai Funaro joining seniors Dylan King and Tory Reynolds in 1:45.50, with sophomores Jack McCullough, Rodney Harris, and Santi Villiers teaming with freshman Sawyer Wright for second in 1:58.65.
Then in the 800m freestyle, sophomore Bliss Hays came in first by a wide margin, finishing at 8:58.78, over 20 seconds ahead of his closest competitor, with junior Bradin Norris taking third at 9:35.88. After a D&E win in the 200m free, Funaro and sophomore Glen Newell took the top two spots in the 50m freestyle in 23.69 and 25.02, respectively. The sides traded victories in the next two events, with the Senators winning the 200m IM and King taking the 100m fly in 57.37.
Davis & Elkins took the 100m free, while Filipovits led the 100m backstroke (57.96) with McCullough in third at 1:05.50. Finally able to earn some momentum, Hays followed with another first place in the 400m freestyle (4:26.90), while Norris (4:29.02) came in second. Needing some results to have a shot at a meet win, the Senators matched pace in the 100m breast with the first two spots, while Reynolds had a spot on the podium in third at 1:12.01.
The meet would come down to the winners of the 200m free relay, as the sides went into the race tied at 94-94. With just one team competing against FSU's two, D&E needed to win the event outright, while either of the Bobcat squads taking first would give the hosts the victory. King kicked things off by giving the A relay team a two-second lead after the first heat, then Newell widened the game by a further five seconds, as Reynolds and Funaro closed things out to win by a convincing final time of 1:37.07 - 1:47.02. The team of Filipovits, Norris, junior RJ Kelly, and freshman Tyler Gibson rounded out the event by almost catching up to the Senators at 1:47.31.
During the meet, Frostburg set several program records, including both relay squads, as Funaro hit the 50m free, King set the 100m fly, and Filipovits broke both the 50m and 100m back.
With the win, the Bobcats improve to 2-1 on the year as D&E begins their competition season at 0-1. FSU next hits the road on Friday, October 23, as they head to Fairmont State for a 5 p.m. meet. For more information, please visit frostburgsports.com.
