Stellar Shooting Lead Men’s Hoops To Win Number One

MANSFIELD, Pa. – Frostburg shot 47% in a back-and-forth battle with Mansfield on the road, ultimately ending with the Bobcats securing their first win as a member of Division II by a final score of 85-77.

Frostburg and the hosting Mounties went back-and-forth for 40 minutes, with the Bobcats holding the lead for the majority of the contest but never by more than the final margin of eight points. Both teams traded leads 16 times throughout the non-conference affair.

Both teams went back-and-forth for the first 20 minutes of play. Frostburg went on an 8-1 run late in the first half before the Mounties would close the gap at halftime with a buzzer-beating layup.

The second half was much of the same, but Frostburg found different ways to score. Despite not converting a three-point shot, FSU shot just over 45% in the second half and held a 24-12 edge over the Mounties in the paint. The Bobcats also converted seven of their final eight field goal attempts to put away the hosts.

The biggest difference that favored Frostburg State was the bench points. Frostburg got 27 points combined off of its bench players compared to Mansfield's six. The Bobcats also outscored the Mounties 18-7 on fast-break points and 17-8 off of turnovers.

In terms of scoring, senior Daniel Alexander led the way in his exceptional start to the season. He tallied 27 points on 11/19 shooting, converted all four of his free-throw attempts, and gobbled up a team-high eight rebounds.

Elsewhere, junior Leondre Rogers added 14 points and senior Demetrich Williams put up 10 points for the Bobcats. Those three players went a perfect 12-for-12 from the charity stripe, including Rogers's six-for-six at the foul line.

Off of the bench, junior Sean Patterson and sophomore Jasiah Perry both chipped in nine points on four-of-seven shooting, with Patterson swiping away three shots.

Frostburg State hits the road this Saturday, November 16, at nearby Shepherd University at 4:00 p.m.
