Volleyball Downed At West Virginia State

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – On Saturday afternoon, the Bobcats lost to West Virginia State in a three set match. FSU falls to 8-10 overall 1-6 in the Mountain East Conference while WVSU advance to 13-9 overall 7-0 in MEC play.
 
Frostburg lost on the road after being defeated by scores of 25-16, 25-10, and 25-16.
 
FSU recorded 20 kills against West Virginia State as well as collecting five service aces and 33 digs. Sophomore Hailey Altemus and first-year Jackie Sterenberg had six kills on the afternoon while first-year Edwyna Lainez earned 14 assists and 5 digs. Senior Cori Smothers recorded 6 digs and one assist while her classmate Bailey Godlove had three service aces.
 
The Yellow Jackets started the scoring with three kills and an attack error to take the lead 4-0 in the first set. Kills from Altemus, Sterenberg, and first-year Raven Pratt tied the game later in the set 12-12. A 6-1 run put the Yellow Jackets up 21-14 until WVSU put together another 8-2 run to take the first set.
 
The Bobcats jumped out in front 4-1 off a kill from Altemus and Godlove's three service aces. A 10-2 run by West Virginia State saw them take the lead and go ahead 11-6. Later in the set the Yellow Jackets went on a 12-2 run to capture the second set win.
 
Kills from Smothers and Pratt helped put the Bobcats up 4-3 in the beginning of the third set. WVSU went on a 6-1 run to take back the lead 9-5. Frostburg battled back with a 5-1 run to cut the scoring gap to 14-12. A 6-2 West Virginia State run earned the Yellow Jackets the win.
