YORK, Pa. – The Frostburg Bobcats fell to York College (Pa.) on Wednesday night with a final score of 71-61.
The Bobcats fall to 12-5 on the season and 4-3 in conference play. York moves to 8-10 overall and 3-4 in conference action.
The Spartans opened the game with a three-pointer by Kayla Ferris and then a layup by Katie McGowan in the first minute of play. The Bobcats answered with a jumper by junior Victoria Yoder making the score 5-2 early on. York went on to convert two more layups to add to their lead making it 9-4. The Bobcats then went on to convert a jumper from Yoder and senior Megan Kelly connected on a three-pointer bringing the score 13-9. At 3:51 in the first quarter, a steal by Kelly then led to a layup by Yoder bringing the Bobcats within two points. Frostburg ended the quarter with two more jumpers by junior Amanda Emory and Yoder to put the Bobcats up 17-15.
The second quarter opened with free throws awarded to York's McGowan was able to convert on one at 9:44. Emory sparked things for the Bobcats as she made a layup to tie the game after a good three-pointer from York's Alana Bortner. York then went on to score eight unanswered points until Diggs converted on two free throws bringing the score 27-21. The Spartans went on another run until Yoder broke up the run with a layup at 2:27. York closed out the half with a three pointer going into halftime with a score of 38-24.
The Bobcats opened the third quarter with a steal by Diggs and a layup by Kelly. Later on at 7:09 first-year, first year Anhai Allen had a fast break in the paint and converted on a layup. York then responded with a layup making the score 42-28 at 6:17. After some missed free throws and three-pointers on both sides, Diggs was good on a jumper after a rebound collected by Emory. York then extended their lead once again by making a layup and converting on a free throw. In the last three minutes of the quarter, Yoder converted on jumper and Kelly on a three pointer. The quarter closed out with three good free throws made by Diggs making the score 42-48.
The final quarter opened with a jumper by McGowan and then answered by Emory keeping the Bobcats within six points. Layups by senior Jasmin Tirado-Viscalla and Emory continued to keep Frostburg within six points at 6:52. York's Victoria Varner made a three pointer at 4:55 to extend the Spartan's lead 61-50. At 1:47 Diggs made a layup bringing the score to 54-64. After being fouled, York's Kayla Ferris made two free throws and then Diggs responded with a layup in the paint making the score 66-56. In the last minute of the game back and forth, free throws and layups landed the score at 71-61.
The Bobcats shot 36.2% from the field and 15.8% on three-pointers. Yoder led Frostburg in points with 22 on the evening. Diggs and Emory were right behind with 15 and 10 points. Emory also led in rebound with 14 rebounds. York shot 40.3% from the field and 42.3% on three-pointers. Katie McGowan led the Spartans with 29 points.
Frostburg is back in action on Saturday, January 26 at 1:00 pm at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Va.
