FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Frostburg women's basketball team attempted a fourth-quarter rally but the Bobcats came up just short in a 59-45 loss at Mary Washington, Saturday afternoon.
The Bobcats drop to 12-6 overall on the season and 4-4 in the CAC, while the host Eagles push their record to 10-9 and 4-4 in the conference.
Frostburg trailed 25-15 at halftime and 40-24 heading into the fourth before it put together a rally. Junior Victoria Diggs started the spurt with a three-pointer at 7:17 and classmate Amanda Emory hit a layup on the ensuing trip down the floor to cut FSU's deficit o 41-32. First-year Drew Dunathan made a layup at 6:50 to pull the Bobcats to within seven at 41-34.
However, Frostburg connected on four free throws but was held without another basket until Diggs hit a three-pointer with 1:44 showing on the fourth quarter clock to make the score 50-41.
Junior Victoria Yoder hit two foul shots with over a minute left and senior Jasmin Tirado-Viscalla hit the game's final basket to set the final 59-45.
Emory finished with a double-double behind 16 points and 10 rebounds. Diggs and senior Megan Kelly each hit two three-pointers and Dunathan grabbed 10 rebounds.
The Bobcats struggled from the floor, shooting just 26.8 percent (15-of-56), while making just 11-of-24 (45.8%) free throws.
Mary Washington starters Kayla Sakyi, Jordan Pamlayne and Emily Thompson each scored in double figures as Sakyi led the charge with 16.
Frostburg held an 11-9 lead after one quarter of play as Kelly hit a three-pointer at 00:56 and first-year Anna Reese hit a jumper with 25 seconds left for the two-point cushion. The hosts rebounded by outscoring Frostburg 15-9 in the second quarter for a 25-15 lead at intermission.
FSU returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Southern Virginia at 5:30 pm.
