SALISBURY, Md. – The Frostburg State men's basketball team won on the road 97-86 against the No. 24 ranked Salisbury Sea Gulls behind five players scoring in double-digits with junior guards Lawrence Pettis Jr. and Terry Kenner each pouring in 20 points.
The win moves the Bobcats (8-8, 4-2 CAC) ahead of the Salisbury Sea Gulls ( 13-4, 3-3 CAC) in CAC play. The victory is FSU's first in Salisbury since the 2010-11 season.
The Bobcats started the afternoon scorching offensively hitting 10 of their first 16 shots to start the game while holding the Sea Gulls to only 33.3% shooting from the floor during that span.
Frostburg State held a 47-38 lead going into the half after a made layup by senior forward Edwin Cole. Cole finished with his ninth double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds. During the first half the Bobcats trailed 27-26 with 8:56 to go before a 10-0 run gave them a 37-27 lead.
The FSU lead ballooned to 17 with just under 13 minutes to go in the second half after a three pointer from Pettis Jr.
The Sea Gulls made a run to cut into single digits with 7:48 to go behind an 10-0 run. Pettis Jr. hit a 12-footer to end the Bobcat drought to make it 76-71 FSU with 6:04 left in the game.
After Cole fouled out of the game first-year forward Nicholas Johnson replaced him and completed an and-one layup to extend the FSU lead to 11, 87-76 with 2:39 to go. Johnson finished the game with a career-best 18 points, including 7-of-8 from the free throw line. Frostburg State closed the game on a 9-4 run.
Junior guard Daniel Alexander added 17 points with seven rebounds and four assists.
The Bobcats ended the afternoon shooting 52.3% from the field and grabbing 42 rebounds.
The FSU bench posted 28 points and the Frostburg team scored 32 points in the paint.
Frostburg State's next matchup is Wednesday as they travel to York, Pennsylvania to play York (Pa.)at 8:00 p.m.
