BROCKPORT, N.Y.- The Frostburg State volleyball team endured a win and a loss of the second day of at the Golden Eagle Invitational
The Bobcats move to 5-4 overall on the season following a 3-0 loss against Baldwin Wallace and a 3-1 victory over SUNY Potsdam.
Game One
Juniors Cori Smothers and Katie Onyuno continued their strong play as the Bobcats fell by scores of 25-12, 25-14, 25-21 in game one.
In the first set, the Yellow Jackets pulled away using two 4-0 runs late in the set. Junior middle hitter, Biamba Tshitenge, who posted a team high 8 kills in the first set. Onyundo finished the set with two aces. Baldwin Wallace hit at a .258 clip which was the highest of the day for either team. Smothers anchored the Bobcat defensive backline with 22 digs.
In the second set, Baldwin Wallace jumped out to an early 6-1 lead. Frostburg State rallied back to tie the match at 6-6. The Yellow Jackets regained control and closed the game on a 19-8 run.
First-Year hitter, Haley Altemus lead the team with 7 kills 1 ace and 1 assist, in the set.
The third set proved to be the best one for the Bobcats. They were down early but used two rallies to get the back in it. The first came as a 4-0 spurt to make it 16-13 after being down 16-10. Then FSU used another 4-0 run to make it 23-19 Yellow Jackets. The Bobcats had their best hitting set with a .154 as a team. Junior outside hitter Bailey Godlove had 6 of the teams 12 kills for the set.
Game Two
First-Year Altemus and Tshitenge helped the Bobcats to a 25-17, 20-25, 25-11, 25-21 4-set win in the day's final match.
In the first set, the Bobcats led from wire to wire. Frostburg jumped out to a quick 11-1 lead. The Bears clawed their way back into the game making the score 22-16. FSU as a team finished with 10 kills in the set along with two aces. Tshitenge led the Bobcats with 13 kills.
In the second set, both teams went back and forth with a 16-15 score. FSU had a late rally to climb back into the set with a 5-0 run to pull to within one at 16-15. SUNY Potsdam outlasted the Bobcats toward the end of the set by winning two crucial points.
The third set showed the Bobcats clicking on all cylinders as they had a hitting percentage of .310. FSU grabbed an 10-3 early lead, and watched it balloon to a 20-8 advantage. The Bobcats ended the set winning five of the last seven points. Junior setter Katie Onyundo finished the match with 37 assists.
The final stanza included two huge runs to grab the set for the Bobcats. They snatched the lead away with a 6-0 run to make it 19-15. Later FSU won three straight points to make it 24-20 before taking the set and match. The Bobcats hit at a .312 clip which was the best of either team on the day.
Frostburg returns to action on Wednesday against Gettysburg at 7:30 p.m.
