HIRAM, Ohio – The Frostburg volleyball team opened the 2018 Hiram College Invite with a pair of losses on Friday night. The Bobcats dropped their first match to Kenyon, 3-0, before losing to host Hiram later in the evening 3-0.
The Ladies won the first match over the Bobcats (5-7) by scores of 27-25, 25-19 and 25-14 before the Terriers downed Frostburg 25-10, 25-23 and 25-20.
Kenyon
FSU first-year Haley Altemus led the charge with 10 kills as junior Katie Onyundo led the team with 13 assists. Junior Cori Smothers posted five digs.
Hiram
In the second match of the night against Hiram, Altemus led the attack with 13 kills, Onyundo handed out 24 assists.
Two Bobcats players had over 10 digs as junior Cori Smothers had 16 and Altemus posted a double-double when she contributed 13 digs.
The Terriers jumped out to a 9-2 lead in set one and they later held a 17-6 advantage. The hosts closed the contest with four-straight points for the win.
The final two sets were much closer for the Bobcats.
FSU led several times during the second contest, including three three-point cushions prior to the midway point of the game. Kills from Altemus and sophomore Rachel Snead helped Frostburg to a 14-12 lead. Altemus later knocked home back-to-back kills as Frostburg tied things at 21. Hiram took advantage of two kills from Kayla Cole late in the set for the win.
In the third set, Hiram opened up a 21-12 lead after using a 7-0 run. Frostburg later closed the gap with a 7-0 spurt of its own that pulled it to within 23-20. Junior Ashante Corey-Bey closed the run with a kill from Onyundo.
The Terriers, however, collected the match victory with the final two points.
Frostburg returns to action tomorrow at Hiram against Johns Carroll at 11:00 am and Kalamazoo at 3:00 pm.
