Women’s Volleyball Drops Two At Hiram Tournament

HIRAM, Ohio – The Frostburg volleyball team left the Hiram College Invite with loses to both John Carroll and Kalamazoo, 3-0 and 3-1 respectively on day two of the tournament.

The Blue Streak beat the Bobcats in straight sets, 25-14, 25-15 and 25-14 shortly before the Bobcats fell to the Hornets, 25-22, 18-25, 25-21 and 25-16. Frostburg falls to 5-9 on the year after the two losses on Saturday.

The Bobcats fought back in the first set from being down 11-6 with four straight points, including two kills by junior Bailey Godlove, to decrease the deficit to 11-10. John Carroll would go on to take control with six-straight points to end the set, two of which came off of aces from sophomore Sarah Calabrese to give the Blue Streaks the 25-14 set win.

FSU junior Ashante Corey-Bey scored three points in the second set, two coming off of back-to-back blocks to narrow Frostburg's margin from 8-5 to 8-7,  but the Blue Streaks once again streaked to the end of the set, scoring nine of the last 11 points to take the set, 25-15.

John Carroll closed out the third and final set against the Bobcats, scoring nine of the set's last 10 points on their way to the 25-14 victory, highlighted by three kills from the Blue Streaks' Calabrese and two from sophomore Alaina Mowinski.

Bobcats first-year Haley Altemus led the team with six kills while Godlove collected four kills and four digs of her own. The Blue Streaks outpaced FSU in aces, 14-1.

Kalamazoo
In the second match of the afternoon the Bobcats were stung by the Hornets, as they lost the match, 3-1. The first set was a back-and-forth affair as the score was tied at 21-21 before the Hornets scored four of the set's final five points to take the 25-22 set victory. FSU first-year Haley Altemus pounded five of her 12 total kills in the first set alone.

The Bobcats were propelled by a 10-0 run to start the second set, highlighted by two aces from junior Bailey Godlove and two kills from sophomore Rachel Snead. Since the start of the set, Kalamazoo would only get as close to six points behind FSU, as Frostburg took the set, 25-18.

FSU started the third set by jumping out to a 10-5 lead over Kalamazoo, before the Hornets bounced back to win the set, 25-21. The Hornets took advantage of back-to-back attack errors from FSU to put them in front, 17-15. The Bobcats would eventually tie the score at 20-20 after an ace from junior Katie Onyundo, but the Hornets would score five out of the set's last six points to take a 2-1 advantage heading into the fourth set.

Kalamazoo scored seven straight points to take an 11-4 lead over the Bobcats and refused to look back on their way to a 25-16 victory to clinch the match.

Altemus led the charge for FSU with 12 kills while Godlove added 11 kills and a game-high four service aces. Corey-Bey had three of FSU's four block in the game and collected five blocks on the day between the two games.

FSU's next match will take place on Wednesday, September 19 at as they hit the road to face Mary Washington in the team's first game against a conference rival of the season.
