Bobcats Fall To Mary Washington In First Conference Game Of The Season

FREDRICKSBURG, Va. – The Frostburg State women's volleyball team lost to Mary Washington, 3-0, in the Bobcats' first match against a Capital Athletic Conference opponent on the season.

The Bobcats fall to 5-10, 0-1 in the CAC in the 25-15, 25-12 and 25-21 loss. The Eagles' record now sits at 8-4, 1-0 in the CAC.
 
Mary Washington pulled away in the first set with a 6-0 run and a 5-0 run on its way to the 25-15 set victory. Frostburg's first set was highlighted by three kills from both junior Ashante Corey-Bey and first-year Haley Altemus.
 
Frostburg came out firing on all cylinders in the second set, starting it off with a 4-0 run, three of which came on errors from the Eagles. Mary Washington responded quickly however, as they turned a 5-1 deficit into an 8-5 advantage by scoring seven unanswered points. The Eagles never looked back, going on a 10-0 run towards the end of the set, two points coming from kills by junior Savannah Powers, giving them a 24-10 lead. 
 
The third set was more competitive for the Bobcats, as they fought back from an early 11-1 deficit, featuring a 5-0 and a 6-0 run from the Eagles. After facing a 17-8 deficit, the Bobcats stormed back to score 11 of the next 13 points to tie the score at 19. That run featured two aces from junior Cori Smothers and two from junior Kathryn Lough.
 
With the Bobcats leading, 21-20, Mary Washington scored five unanswered points to take the set, 25-21 and the conference victory.
 
Frostburg led the game with six aces against the Eagles' two, but Mary Washington had a 41-19 kills advantage.
 
Altemus led the Bobcats with seven kills, while Corey-Bey had six of her own, as well as a game-high five blocks.
 
FSU will participate in the Hampton Inn River Hawk Classic in Selinsgrove, Pa. this upcoming weekend, with their first match coming against Messiah on Friday at 5:00 p.m.
