FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg volleyball team took unbeaten Gettysburg to five sets on Wednesday evening before the Bobcats ultimately lost to the Bullets, 3-2.
Frostburg evens its record at 5-5 with the loss while Gettysburg improves to 10-0.
The five-set marathon between the two schools marks the fifth time in the eight previous meetings that the matches have gone the distance. The last time the two played to five sets was in 2009 and resulted in a 3-2 Frostburg win.
On Wednesday, the Bullets opened the night with a 28-26 game-one win. Junior Biamba Tshitenge smashed a kill and the Bobcats capitalized on an attack error to grab a late 26-25 lead. GC closed the set with back-to-back kills from Allie Stranick and Faith Adams.
In set two, FSU used an 8-1 run and later a quick 3-0 spurt for a 21-17 lead. Junior Bailey Godlove and Tshitenge helped FSU to a 25-20 win with two late kills.
Gettysburg rallied with a 25-13 game three victory. The visitors opened up a 10-4 cushion and never looked back. The Bullets scored the game's final five points behind three kills for the win.
Frostburg was determined to send the match to a fifth set after taking game four, 25-21. Tshitenge helped Frostburg open up a quick 4-0 lead with two kills. A pair of Godlove kills helped Frostburg to a 10-4 lead and Tshitenge had three kills as part of a 6-0 run for the Bobcats as they led 22-17. Sophomore Rachel Snead closed the game with a kill for the 25-21 win.
The Bullets collected points in pairs in the fifth and decisive game and slowly pulled away from the Bobcats. A kill from Francesca Garison and an error on Frostburg handed the visitors a 10-6 lead. Kasey Higgins closed the night with three kills in the closing points of the fifth set for the win.
Tshitenge registered a team-best 13 kills, while Godlove finished with eight. Junior Cori Smothers posted a career-high 41 digs, good for second all-time in program history in digs per match. First-year Haley Altemus posted seven kills and 12 digs, while junior Katie Onyundo handed out 35 assists with 10 digs.
Frostburg returns to action on Friday at the Hiram Tournament. The Bobcats open the weekend with Kenyon on Friday at 5:30 pm.
