FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg softball team earned a sweep over Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) opponent Penn State-Harrisburg with an 8-0 victory in game one and a 3-2 win in the nightcap.
With the sweep, Frostburg moves to 20-14 overall and 7-7 in the CAC clinching the No. 4 seed in the upcoming CAC Tournament. The victories mark the Bobcats' fourth-straight 20-win season.
In game one, senior Allison Short pitched a complete game shutout earning her 10
th victory of the season (10-6). Short allowed four hits to go along with two strikeouts in 19 batters faced. With the start in the circle today, Short now holds the all-time appearance and starts record for Bobcat pitchers with 84 and 76, respectively.
First-year Taylor McCarty, first-year Aliyah Ramey and sophomore Claire Hanlon each recorded two hits in three at-bats.
Senior Sam Gatton blasted a lead-off home run in the bottom of the first inning to give Frostburg a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, sophomore Katelyn Mehrling scored a run off an error by PSH for a 2-0 advantage.
The Bobcats tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the second inning off a Hanlon double that scored Short and senior Brittney Platt for a 4-0 lead.
Ramey hit an RBI single in the bottom of the third to score McCarty for a 5-0 advantage.
In the bottom half of the fourth inning, Mehrling hit a two-run RBI single scoring Short and junior Olivia Ford to take a commanding 7-0 lead.
Platt scored the game's final run off a Ford single in the bottom of the fifth to end the game 8-0.
In the nightcap, Mehrling pitched a complete game allowing zero earned runs on three hits with two strikeouts. The win improves Mehrling's record to 5-3 and marks her fifth complete game of the year.
The Bobcats were led by Gatton at the plate recording two hits and two RBI with one run scored, while Platt generated two hits in two at-bats.
Frostburg tallied a run on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the first inning as Hanlon scored on an error by PSH for a 1-0 lead.
The Lions answered in the top of the second inning to tie the contest 1-1.
Penn State Harrisburg took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third off a Bobcat error.
Gatton notched a two-run homer for her second of the day and fourth of the season in the bottom of the fifth inning for a 3-2 lead. Mehrling allowed just one base runner in the last two innings to preserve the win.
With the No. 4 position locked, Frostburg will travel to host and No. 1 seed Christopher Newport, Friday and will play No. 6 seed Penn State Harrisburg at 2:00 p.m. and CNU at 4:00 p.m.
