Softball Splits in the First Day of the CAC Tournament

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Frostburg State softball team defeated Penn State Harrisburg 7-3 in its first game of the 2018 Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Softball Tournament and fell to No. 8 Christopher Newport 10-0 in the second game, Friday afternoon.

In game one, senior Allison Short earned her 11th win and complete game of the season allowing two earned runs on seven hits with two strikeouts. With the win, Short ties Megan Magee for Frostburg's career pitching wins record at 50. Short also broke Magee's career record in innings pitched with 495.

Senior Sam Gatton opened the game with a lead-off triple to right field and during the next at-bat sophomore Claire Hanlon notched an RBI single as Gatton crossed the plate to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead.

In the second inning with the bases loaded, Gatton grounded out to the shortstop but was able to bat in first-year Sam Caver for a 2-0 Frostburg advantage.

The Bobcats added four runs in the third inning as Carver recorded an RBI single scoring sophomore Katelyn Mehrling. In the next at-bat, senior Brittney Platt singled to left field scoring first-year Aliyah Ramey from third, while later in the inning, Gatton notched her second and third RBI of the contest bringing junior Olivia Ford and Platt around the bases for a 6-0 Frostburg lead.

Penn State Harrisburg answered in the bottom of the third with two runs and four hits cutting the Bobcat lead to 6-2.

First-year Kat Treff put the Bobcats up 7-2 in the top of the fifth inning as she stole third base and scored on an error by the Lions.

In game two, Frostburg recorded one hit and left two runners on base, while Christopher Newport totaled 11 hits, eight RBI and left six runners on base.

Mehrling started the contest in the circle and is credited with the loss (5-4) allowing six earned runs on eight hits with a strikeout in three and two-thirds innings pitched.

First-year Ally Wieman totaled 1.1 innings pitched allowing three earned runs on three hits.

The Captains struck first in the top off the first inning as they added two runs off a wild pitch and on an RBI single for a 2-0 lead over the Bobcats.

In the top of the third, CNU added two runs on one hit with an error committed by the Bobcats, while in the fourth inning the Captains added three more runs with three hits to take a 7-0 lead over the Bobcats.

In the top of the fifth, CNU's Rachel Payne notched a three run RBI double to take a 10-0 advantage over Frostburg.

The Bobcats recorded their only hit of the game in the bottom of the fifth as Ramey singled down the left field line for her 32nd hit of the season.

Frostburg returns to action tomorrow morning in the first weekend of the 2018 CAC Softball Tournament with a matchup against Christopher Newport set for 10:00 a.m.
