FROSTBURG, Md - The Frostburg State softball team dropped two games in a Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) doubleheader against Salisbury, Saturday afternoon.
The Bobcats fell to the Sea Gulls 5-2 in an eight inning game one, while they lost game two, 13-1 in five innings.
With the losses, Frostburg falls to 16-12 overall and 3-5 in league play, while Salisbury improves to 20-10 overall and 7-3 in the conference.
In the first game, senior Allison Short was tagged with the loss as her record falls to 8-5. Short allowed five earned runs on nine hits with two strikeouts and no walks in 7.2 innings.
Sophomore Katelyn Mehrling finished the game in the circle facing just one batter, forcing her into a groundout.
At the plate, Mehrling recorded one hit, one run scored and one RBI, while senior Sam Gatton notched a hit, scored one run and was walked once.
The Bobcats scored their only two runs of the contest in the bottom of the first inning, scoring the first run off a Mehrling double that scored Gatton from first base to take a 1-0 lead. Frostburg loaded the bases with two outs as senior Brittney Platt was walked, bringing home Mehrling for a 2-0 advantage.
In the top of the sixth, Salisbury's Emily Allen hit a two-run home run to tie the game at 2-2.
In the eighth inning, the Sea Gulls scored three runs on four hits, giving them a 5-3 lead and the win.
In the second game, first-year Ally Wieman was credited with the loss (5-4) allowing two earned runs on eight hits with one strikeout in 2.2 innings pitched. Mehrling took over the mound in the third inning, allowing five earned runs on seven hits in 1.2 innings pitched.
Frostburg recorded three hits, one RBI and left six runners on base, while Salisbury had 15 hits, nine RBI and left four runners on base.
In the top of the third inning, Salisbury scored seven runs on six hits to take an 8-0 lead as Frostburg committed three errors in the inning. Â The Sea Gulls added five more runs in the top of the fifth inning giving them a 13-0 advantage.
First-year Emily Moll finished the game in the circle for the Bobcats with 2/3 innings pitched.
Frostburg's only run came in the bottom of the fifth inning as sophomore Claire Hanlon hit a double scoring Gatton from second base.
The Bobcats are back in action Friday as they travel to Mary Washington for a CAC doubleheader set for 3:00 p.m.
