FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Frostburg State softball team collected two Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) road victories against Mary Washington, Friday.
Frostburg outlasted Mary Washington 3-2 in a 10 inning game one, while they won game two 7-3.
With the two wins, the Bobcats jump to 18-12 overall and 5-5 in conference play, while the Eagles drop to 14-21-1 overall and 3-8-1 in the CAC.
In game one, first-year Sam Carver led Frostburg at the plate, with two hits, two RBI and one walk in four at-bats, while senior Sam Gatton added two hits and a stolen base.
In the circle, senior Allison Short picked up her ninth complete game and victory (9-5) of the season. In 10.0 innings, Short allowed two runs on 12 hits with four strikeouts and did not allow an earned run or walk.
The Bobcats quickly grabbed the lead in the top of the first inning, as first-year Aliyah Ramey singled down the right-field line, scoring sophomore Katelyn Mehrling from second base to take a 1-0 advantage.
In the bottom half of the inning, Mary Washington answered with two runs of their own taking a 2-1 lead.
Frostburg tied the game 2-2 in the top of the sixth inning with an RBI single to center field from Caver as first-year Carly Wirth scored from second base.
The Bobcats scored the final run of the contest in the top of the 10th inning as Carver recorded her second RBI of the game on a fielder's choice, scoring first-year Emily Moll for the 3-2 lead and victory.
In the nightcap, Mehrling pitched a complete game allowing three earned runs on five hits with eight strikeouts and no walks. Mehrling is credited with her fourth win (4-3) to go along with her fifth complete game.
At the plate, Ramey and first-year Taylor McCarty both tallied two hits and two runs scored, while Gatton also added two hits. This marks Gatton's 10th-straight game with a hit.
In the top of the first inning, Ramey again notched an RBI single scoring Mehrling from second to give Frostburg a 1-0 lead.
With two outs and the bases loaded, first-year Ally Wieman cracked a three-run RBI double into left field scoring senior Brittney Platt, McCarty and Ramey for a 4-0 advantage.
The Bobcats added another run in the top of the sixth off a sophomore Claire Hanlon sacrifice-fly to left field, bringing home junior Olivia Ford for a 5-0 lead.
In the top of the seventh inning, Frostburg added two insurance runs off a Caver and Platt RBI to take a comfortable 7-0 lead.
Mary Washington added three runs in the bottom of the seventh on four hits to cut the Frostburg lead to a final score of 7-3.
Up next for the Bobcats is a CAC doubleheader as they travel to No. 11 Christopher Newport tomorrow with the first pitch set for 1:30 p.m.
