Game Two Win Highlights Baseball DH vs. No. 5/5 CNU

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State baseball team split its Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) doubleheader with a 12-2 loss in game one and a 6-3 victory in game two against the fifth-ranked Christopher Newport Captains on Saturday afternoon at Bob Wells Field.

Frostburg (17-9, 5-6 CAC) smacked a total of 19 hits between the two games and limited a potent Christopher Newport (27-6, 11-2 CAC) offense to just three runs in the second game. CNU has scored the most runs in the conference this season, posting over 150 more runs than its opponents.

GAME ONE
The opportunistic Captains rallied from an early 1-0 deficit and posted a 12-2 win in game one against the Bobcats.

Senior infielder Patrick Bosley and senior outfielder Matt Bougourd had two hits each and Bosley got Frostburg on the board in the second inning with a single to left for a 1-0 edge.

CNU countered with three runs in the third and single runs in the fifth and sixth before the Bobcats plated their second and final run of the opening matchup.

The Captains racked up seven more runs over the final two innings for a comfortable 12-2 lead.

Seniors Logan Corrigan and Mike Takovich had one hit each for Frostburg. Junior Brady Adam (3-3) had a spirited outing with 6.1 innings pitched. Adam surrendered 10 hits and five runs with a pair of strikeouts.

First-year Bret Fogle, junior Michael Brunvoll and junior Travis Brashear all saw time on the mound out of the Frostburg bullpen.

GAME TWO
Frostburg rebounded in a big way with a 6-3 victory in the game two of the twin bill. The Bobcats overcame a 2-0 deficit with a five-run third inning.

Adam and Bougourd had three hits each for Frostburg while Burger and sophomore infielder Devin Griffith added a pair of knocks apiece.

The Bobcats pieced together a pitching gem with four hurlers playing a vital role in the win. Corrigan made his seventh start of the season on the mound. Corrigan, who also served as the designated hitter for game two, pitched four innings and allowed just three hits and two runs with four strikeouts.

Trailing 2-0, Frostburg opened up a 5-2 lead in the third. Corrigan helped his own cause with a single to right which advanced Takovich to third. Bougourd plated Takovich in the next at-bat with a single to short as Frostburg trailed just 2-1.

Burger cleared the bases in his next plate appearance after blistering a double to the wall in left center, scoring Bougourd from first and Corrigan from second for a 3-2 lead. Bosley recorded the fourth-straight hit of the inning in the next at-bat, which scored Burger and handed FSU a 5-3 edge.

Griffith delivered an RBI single after a double from junior infielder Nick Fuhrmann allowed Bosley to advance to third. Bosley scored on the Griffith single as Frostburg surged ahead, 5-2.

CNU plated one run in the fifth to cut the Frostburg lead to 5-3 but the Bobcats added the final tally of the afternoon in the eighth for the 6-3 final. The Bobcats successfully recorded three-straight sacrifice attempts, highlighted by a sacrifice fly to left from Takovich that scored Griffith for the 6-3 advantage.

Junior Chase Delost (2-1) earned the victory with 1.1 innings of relief work where he surrendered just two hits and one run with a pair of strikeouts.

Senior Daniel Richardson continued his stretch of stellar pitching with a 2.2 inning relief appearance. Richardson allowed just one hit with three strikeouts and made a dazzling barehanded play in the sixth to retire JT Bellotti at the plate.

Sophomore Mike Livingston notched his fifth save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning that included two strikeouts.
