Frostburg Holds Off Southern Virginia

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg men's lacrosse team held off a feisty Southern Virginia team for an 11-9 win in CAC action, Wednesday.

The Bobcats (8-6, 3-2 CAC) led 6-4 at halftime and never surrendered the lead to Southern Virginia, but the Knights (8-6, 2-3 CAC) made things interesting by tying the ballgame three times in the second half.

SVU opened the third frame with back-to-back goals at 9:29 and again at 7:19 that knotted the contest at 6-6.

First-year Nick Gallagher pushed Frostburg back ahead at 7-6 with his third goal of the year with 5:44 left. Shawn Lamb, who led the Knights in scoring, found the net at 2:43 that evened things at 7-7.

Senior Adam Gross gave the Bobcats an 8-7 advantage with a goal late in the third quarter.

Lamb again answered for Southern Virginia by tying the game for the third time with the first goal of the fourth quarter (9:29).

Senior Nate Collins had a hand in Frostburg's next two goals and a 10-8 lead. Collins found senior Keegan Colegrove at 6:21 and he scooped up a rebounded shot in front on the Knight net and scored an unassisted tally a moment later that gave Frostburg back the momentum.

Southern Virginia's Anthony Good pulled the visitors to within 10-9 when he scored at 2:26, but Frostburg sealed the win with an empty net goal with 12 seconds left as Gross found sophomore Jake Howarth for the 11-9 final.

Frostburg featured a balanced scoring attack against the Knights as eight Bobcats accounted for the 11 goals. Howarth and Collins each scored twice and handed out two assists, while first-year Matt Pagliaro won 8-of-15 faceoffs.

Sophomore Jack Marks finished with eight saves and a team-best seven ground balls, while senior Sam Camponeschi caused three turnovers.

Following Good's goal with 2:26 to play, Jace Thomas won the ensuing faceoff for SVU, but Frostburg junior Greg Giles forced a turnover from Thomas and Frostburg never allowed the Knights to regain possession.

Frostburg's largest lead of the afternoon came with its first goal of the second quarter when senior Quinn Western found senior Daniel Paladino for a 5-2 cushion. First-year Jason Clinton closed the half with a goal with 43 seconds left off a pass from sophomore Dylan Scheeler.

The Bobcats led 30-23 in shots and scooped up 40 ground balls. The hosts were also nearly perfect on clears (13-of-14).

Lamb led Southern Virginia with five goals and one assist, including three goals in the second half. Good finished with two scores.

Frostburg returns to action on Saturday when it hosts St. Mary's at 1:00 pm for senior day.
