LITTLE RIVER, S.C. – The Frostburg State softball team notched two shutout wins in a doubleheader against Brooklyn in the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic at the North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex, Saturday morning.
Game one the Bobcats blanked Brooklyn 16-0, while in game two they downed Brooklyn 14-0.
In game one, Frostburg totaled 19 hits, 16 runs batted in and left seven on-base with 32 at-bats, while Brooklyn notched just two hits and left one runner on base.
Senior Allison Short earned the victory (5-2) while only allowing one hit with seven strikeouts and no walks in 3.0 innings pitched. First-year Emily Moll finished the game with 2.0 innings pitched allowing one hit and totaled two strikeouts.
First-year Aliyah Ramey lead the Bobcats at the plate going 4-for-4 with five runs batted in and one run scored, while senior Sam Gatton went 3-for-4 from the plate, driving three runs in and scoring twice.
In the top of the first, Ramey doubled and knocked home Gatton and junior Olivia Ford to take a 2-0 lead. Later in the inning, senior Brittney Platt tripled and scored sophomore Katlyn Mehrling from second base giving the Bobcats a 3-0 lead.
Frostburg scored eight of its 16 runs in the top of the third inning on just seven hits.
In the fifth inning, Gatton tripled and drove-in first-year Kat Treff and first-year Hannah Bush to take a 16-0 lead and win.
In game two, first-year Ally Wieman pitched a complete-game, one-hit shutout improving her record to 3-2 on the season. Weiman pitched 5.0 innings striking out seven batters and only walking one with just 17 batters faced.
With 25 at-bats, Frostburg tallied 10 hits and 10 runs batted in while leaving nine runners on base.
Gatton led the way with two hits, three RBI, and two runs scored, while first-year Taylor McCarty notched two hits, two RBI and crossed the plate one time.
The Bobcats opened the game strong scoring 10 of their 14 runs while facing two outs in the first inning. In the inning, McCarty doubled and scored Ford form third base, while the next at-bat Platt notched a triple scoring McCarty and giving the Bobcats a 2-0 lead. Later in the inning, Frostburg scored five runs on five walks with the bases loaded.
In the third inning, Gatton recorded her second double of the game and knocked home Moll from second base to take a 14-0 lead.
The Bobcats are back in action Tuesday for their final day in the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic with a doubleheader against Salem set for 10:00 a.m.
