MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Frostburg State softball team closed its spring break trip in Myrtle Beach with a split against Salem after the Bobcats took game one 4-3 and dropped the nightcap 5-3.
Senior starter Allison Short collected her sixth victory of the spring in the opener after allowing just two earned runs in 7.0 innings pitched.
Five different Bobcat players posted two or more hits as senior Sam Gatton finished 3-for-4 with one RBI and a run scored, while senior Brittany Platt was 2-for-4 with two runs and a RBI. Gatton finished the six-game spring-break trip with 10 hits, 10 RBI and eight runs.
The two teams combined for 27 hits, but neither team was able to score multiple runs in an inning.
The Bobcats (11-5) jumped out to a 2-1 edge following two innings. Sophomore Katelyn Mehrling singled home Gatton in the first inning and Platt led off the second frame with her second home run of the season.
Frostburg jumped out to a 3-1 lead after Gatton singled home Platt in the fourth.
Salem (15-13) evened the game at 3-3 with single runs in the fourth and fifth before Bobcat junior Olivia Ford singled home sophomore Claire Hanlon for the win in the sixth.
In game two, the Spirits scored four runs in the top of the seventh for the win.
Frostburg struck first when first-year Taylor McCarty singled home both Ford and Gatton for the quick 2-0 lead after the first inning.
Salem narrowed the gap to 2-1 with a run in the second, but FSU pushed its lead back to two, 3-1 in the third when Hanlon singles home McCarty.
Frostburg was held without a base runner over the final four innings and Salem plated its four runs in the top of the seventh with two outs for the win.
Mehrling endured the loss despite allowing just two earned runs on the afternoon. She also fanned one and surrendered just seven hits.
McCarty finished the second game with two hits, two RBI and one run, while Hanlon had two hits and one RBI.
Frostburg returns to action on Friday, March 30 when it hosts Bridgewater at 3:00 pm.
