SALISBURY, Md. – A pair of Bobcats scored in double figures but the Frostburg State women's basketball team was handed a 60-46 defeat at the hands of in-state rival Salisbury on Saturday afternoon.
Frostburg (10-11, 6-8 CAC) had trouble finding an offensive rhythm throughout and posted just eight points in the final quarter. Salisbury (12-9, 7-7 CAC) held a 20-3 edge in bench points and outscored the Bobcats 38-12 in the paint.
Sophomore guard Victoria Diggs tallied a team-leading 15 points to put herself in double figures in eight of her last 10 appearances. First-year guard Kayla Wilson chipped in 13 points on 6-of-13 shooting with two rebounds and an assist.
Sophomore forward Victoria Yoder turned in a balanced performance with nine points, seven rebounds and one assist in 36 minutes.
Frostburg went 19-of-64 (29.7%) from the floor and 7-of-24 (29.2%) from three-point range while Salisbury went 24-of-57 (42.1%) from the field.
Salisbury opened the game on a 6-0 run before Frostburg clawed back with a three from Diggs at 6:45 in the first to make it 6-5. Yoder scored the final basket of the quarter with seven seconds remaining to cut the Bobcat deficit to three, 15-12.
Diggs drilled another three at 7:34 in the second quarter, bringing the visitors to within one before Wilson gave Frostburg its first lead of the afternoon, 20-19, with 6:50 left in the opening half. A fastbreak layup from Yoder handed Frostburg a 24-23 lead with 3:49 showing on the second quarter clock before the hosts concluded the half on an 8-2 scoring surge for a 31-26 halftime lead.
Frostburg looked to crawl back into the game in the third quarter with baskets by Wilson at 7:18 and Yoder at 4:42 to bring the deficit to within five. Wilson scored five points in the final 34 seconds of the third quarter as Frostburg trailed by just two, 40-38.
Salisbury, led by Kaylyn French, took control in the final quarter to earn the 60-46 win. French posted a game-high 25 points and Paige Bryce added 10.
Frostburg returns home for another key conference matchup on Wednesday, February 7 when it hosts Mary Washington at 6 p.m.
