Frostburg, Md. – A late barrage of three-pointers by the Bobcats was not enough to overcome an 18-point Mary Washington fourth quarter lead, and the Eagles defeated Frostburg State 75-67 on Thursday evening.
With the defeat, Frostburg falls to 10-12 overall, 6-9 in Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) play. The Eagles advanced to 12-10, 11-4 in league play.
Sophomore Victoria Yoder led the way for Frostburg State, connecting on 7-of-8 free throws on her way to a team-high 13 points. Sophomore Victoria Diggs and first-year Kayla Wilson each knocked down a pair of three-pointers on the evening and both finished with 10 points.
Frostburg shot 22-of-66 from the field (33.3%) and 8-of-29 (27.6%) from three while Mary Washington connected on 22-of-55 (40.0%) from the floor and 9-of-18 (50%) from deep.
In a competitive first quarter, Frostburg used a 5-0 spurt to turn a 9-5 deficit into a 10-9 lead thanks to an Amanda Emory layup and a Diggs three. Mary Washington then took a three-point 17-14 lead that was trimmed to 17-16 on Yoder's fast break lay-in in the waning seconds of the quarter.
The second quarter continued the competitive spirit of the first with five straight Frostburg points coming from Wilson to trim Mary Washington's lead back down to two points (25-23). However, the Eagles outscored Frostburg State 16-5 over the final 5:04 of the second quarter. In that span, Mary Washington held the Bobcats without a field goal and connected on three three-point field goals and led 41-28 at the halftime break.
In the third quarter the Bobcats were unable to get closer than 11 points on an early jumper by Wilson and then later on a three-pointer by Diggs with 2:30 to play in the quarter. Each time the Bobcats trimmed the Mary Washington lead, the Eagles responded to keeps its advantage over double figures.
In the fourth quarter, Mary Washington stretched its lead to as many as 18 points with 2:38 left in regulation before the Bobcats went on a final push. After a scoreless first three quarters, junior Megan Kelly knocked down three three-pointers in the final two minutes and senior Adjowa Pinkrah added one of her own. The 14-2 run cut the UMW lead to just six with under 10 seconds to play. The Eagles took care of the basketball and made their free throws in the final remaining seconds to secure the win.
The Bobcats only turned the basketball over nine times, the second-lowest turnover total for Frostburg State all season. However, Mary Washington owned an advantage on the glass, outrebounding Frostburg 46-36.
The double-digit outing by Wilson marked the sixth straight game she's scored at least ten points. Kelly added nine points, all on three-pointers in the final two minutes of regulation.
Junior Amber Downey netted eight points and a season-best 11 rebounds, six of which were offensive. Sophomore Sydney Stotler made all three of her field goal attempts on her way to six points and four rebounds in 20 minutes of action. Emory also chipped in six with five rebounds and two steals.
Mary Washington featured the game's two top scorers, McKenzie Jenkins and Kendall Parker who contributed 16 points each. The duo combined to shoot 8-12 from three.
The Bobcats hit the road on Saturday to take on Marymount (Va.) in another critical CAC contest. Tip-off with the Saints is slate for 1:00 p.m.
