GLASSBORO, N.J. – The Frostburg State volleyball team dropped a pair of matches to Scranton and Eastern in its two Saturday matches at the Rowan Quad.
The Bobcats fell to Scranton 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-14) and took Eastern to five sets before losing 3-2 (25-15, 19-25, 16-25-25-22, 15-11).
Scranton
Frostburg State fell in their first game of Saturday's two-game slate, as Scranton took the match, 3-0.
The Bobcats started the match on a quick note, jumping out to a 6-2 lead which featured a kill and a block from junior Biamba Tshitenge. Scranton later erased a 4-0 deficit after scoring four straight points to tie the set, 9-9 thanks in part to two blocks from Eryn Boken. The Royals refused to let the Bobcats pull away, as Scranton scored another four straight points to take their first lead of the set at 18-15. Scranton cruised the rest of way to win the set, 25-20.
The Royals held the lead in the entire second set up until the Bobcats took advantage of three attack errors to go on a 5-0 run to tie the score, 17-17. Scranton would turn it around to take the lead and win the set, 25-20.
The third set started with a 2-0 lead from Frostburg, but the Royals scored six of the next seven points, thanks to three aces from Boken, to take a 6-3 lead. The Bobcats fought back, going on a 4-0 run that included two aces from junior Hannah Brown to lead them to a 7-6 lead.
Scranton would jump ahead again by scoring six of the next seven points, giving them a 12-8 lead. The Royals wouldn't give up the lead again, as they finished strong with a 5-0 run to give them a commanding 24-13 lead which propelled them to a 25-14 win, clinching the match in the third set.
Tshitenge would lead the Bobcats with nine kills in the match, while junior setter Katie Onyundo collected 18 assists.
Eastern
In game two the Eagles entered the match with a 16-3 record and had only dropped a single set in its first two contests of the weekend. The Bobcats pushed Eastern to a fifth set before suffering a narrow defeat.
After the Bobcats scored the first point of the match, Eastern answered with 10-consecutive points of its own to take control of the set. The Bobcats trimmed the deficit to six points on several occasions, but could not come any closer and dropped the set 25-15.
In the second set, the Bobcats were the team to seize an early advantage and led 9-1. Altemus, Tshitenge and junior Ashante Corey-Bey each collected a kill in the early surge. Eastern battled back within four at 15-11, but a kill from Altemus and an ace from junior Cori Smothers kept the Eagles at bay, and the Bobcats cruised to a 25-19 set victory.
In the third set the Bobcats hit a blistering .306 and smacked 13 kills and only two errors. Six different Bobcats contributed a kill, including four from Corey-Bey and three by Altemus. The Bobcats led the third set wire-to-wire and picked up a 25-16 win.
In the fourth set, the Bobcats continued to swing effectively, notching another 14 kills at a .182 hitting percentage. The Eagles responded with 13 kills of their own in what was the closest set of the afternoon. The set featured 11 ties with neither team leading by more than three points. Sophomore Rachel Snead collected three early kills in the going to help Frostburg to a 5-4 advantage. Eastern scored eight of the next 12 points to lead 12-8, but two Eagle errors had the set tied at 15. An ace from Onyundo gave FSU a 17-16 edge, which was immediately reclaimed by the Eagles, who extended to a 21-18 advantage. Altemus smacked a kill to bring the score to 22-21 Eagles, before Eastern closed out the set 25-22.
In the fifth set, Frostburg led 3-0 and 10-5, but the Eagles put together a furious rally, registering seven kills and an ace to finish out the fifth set on a 10-1 run.
Corey-Bey led the Bobcats with 11 kills and four total blocks. Altemus posted nine kills and 13 digs, and Snead added eight kills and three total blocks. Onyundo handed out 31 assists, had 11 digs and chipped in with four kills. Smothers collected 22 digs and four service aces.
The Bobcats (7-17, 0-2 CAC) will travel to Stevenson on Wednesday for a 7:00 p.m. start.
