OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Frostburg State volleyball team lost at Stevenson 3-0 on Wednesday evening in non-conference action.
The Mustangs (13-11) took the match by a count of 25-11, 25-21, 25-16 to move to 13-11 while the Bobcats (7-18) fell to 7-18.
Stevenson came out swinging in the first set, hitting a blistering .600 by racking up 19 kills in 13 swings with just one error. The Mustangs raced out to a 5-1 advantage and never trailed in the first set, cruising to a 25-11 win.
The second set was the most contested of the evening as the Bobcats held a two-point advantage on four separate occasions. However Stevenson reeled off four-straight points to take a 15-14 lead. The set was tied seven times between 15-15 and 21-21. After the back-and-forth play, Stevenson finished out the set with the final five points to take set two 25-21.
The second set was Frostburg's most efficient set, hitting .281 with 13 kills. Junior Biamba Tshitenge led the way with four kills and first-year Alyssa Barkdall added three.
In the third set, Stevenson used a 6-0 spurt to lead 15-6 and the Bobcats were unable trim the deficit any smaller than seven points for the rest of the match.
Tshitenge led the way for the Bobcat offense with six kills, one ace and one block. Barkdoll chipped in five kills, as did junior Bailey Godlove. Junior Katie Onyundo handed out 17 assists and slipped in four kills. Junior Cori Smothers led the Bobcat defense with 15 digs while dishing six assists.
As a team, the Bobcats hit .149 while Stevenson produced at a .353 rate. The Mustangs hit over .200 in all three sets.
FSU returns home this weekend for the Frostburg Tri-Match on Saturday. The Bobcats will take on York (Pa.) in a Capital Athletic Conference matchup and Pitt-Bradford in non-conference play. Frostburg plays the Spartans at noon on Saturday and the Panthers at 4:00 p.m.
