Bobcats Defeated By Ranked Opponent

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Frostburg State field hockey team fell to the 19th–ranked Washington & Jefferson squad, 6-0 in a nonconference game on the road on Wednesday Night.

W&J opened the scoring early, as senior defender Rachel Buyan scored the first goal of the game in the sixth minute of action off of a pass from junior Rachel Fromm. The Presidents scored their second goal in the 10th minute of play, as senior Gabby Karr deposited her third goal of the season in the back of the cage. Buyan added to her night by earning the assist to give the Presidents an early 2-0 lead.

Buyan again found the back of the cage in the 17th minute, giving her two goals on the contest and W&J a 3-0 lead midway through the first half.

The Presidents would add another goal before the half was over, as senior Claire Shaak would rattle the back of the cage with a goal of her own in the 28th minute, giving W&J a 4-0 halftime lead.

Frostburg had five penalty corner opportunities to produce some offense, but the Presidents defense held the Bobcats to just one shot in the half, which rolled wide off the stick of sophomore Gabby Rachuba.

The halftime pause didn't slow down the Presidents' offensive attack, as Shaak added another goal just over three minutes after the teams came out of the locker room. Buyan would be given the assist, her second of the game.

In the game's 54th minute of action, W&J added the final tally to their score, as freshman Madeline Hubbard would score her first goal of the season to give the Presidents a 6-0 lead.

FSU goalkeeper Sierra Smizer faced 16 shots on goal, collecting nine saves in the effort. Sophomore Sam Coffey, senior Holly Van Wie, junior Logan Gladden and senior Samantha Schaffer all had shots on goal in the second half.

Overall, the Presidents offense held a 21-5 advantage in shots over the Bobcats, including a 16-4 lead in shots on goal.

The Bobcats record now sits a 1-9 on the season, while the Presidents improve to 9-0.
