FROSTBURG, Md. – The fourth-seed Frostburg State men's soccer team defeated #5 York (Pa.), 3-1 at home on Saturday night. The win clinches a spot in the Capital Athletic Conference semifinals round against #1 Mary Washington, who dispatched Southern Virginia earlier this afternoon.
York started the match quickly, as the Spartans took their first shot just 37 seconds into the game. The shot came off the foot of Spartans' senior Tony Mosqueira, but was blocked by the Frostburg defense.
The Bobcats would avoid any more danger as they cleared the ball and started their own offensive attack, when their first shot came in the game's third minute. Sophomore Punya Salkeekul ripped a shot toward the York goal that sailed high. Shortly after, sophomore midfielder Randy Putnam put a shot on target that forced York's sophomore goalkeeper Billy Bridegum to make his first save of the match.
The match remained scoreless until senior defender Brett Basham took a pass from first-year Kaps Kapende and deposited it into the back of the net, giving the Bobcats an early 1-0 lead in the 17
th minute.
The goal was Basham's third of the season and his second against York, as he also netted the only goal of the Bobcats' match against York in the regular season.
The Spartans would try to answer with a goal of their own, as Zion Friday headed a shot that looked destined for the back of the net in the 32
nd minute of action, but first-year goalie Joel Assal made a tremendous diving save to keep Frostburg ahead.
Both offenses tried to make something happen in the final minutes of the first half. In the 43
rd minute, Spartans freshman Chase Crable, took a shot that was saved again by a diving Assal to keep ork off the board. Less than a minute later, with under two minutes remaining on the clock, Putnam put another shot on target that was again stopped by Bridegum. The Bobcats took their 1-0 lead into the halftime locker room and also held an 8-7 shot advantage.
The Spartans offense started the second half quickly, as both Danny Morgan and Isiah Dorsey forced Joel Assal to make a save 20 seconds apart from each other in the 52
nd minute of action.
York took eight of the first nine shots in the half, three of which were stopped by Assal. The Spartans' ninth shot of the half was the first one that beat the Frostburg goalkeeper, as Friday finally got one passed Assal to knot up the score, 1-1. Junior Keith Witherell provided the assist on the Spartan goal.
The game remained tied until the 80
th minute, when Bobcat first-year Trevor Namie chose a good time to score his first collegiate goal to give his team a 2-1 advantage in his first playoff game. The goal was assisted by sophomore Mo Odolla.
The Bobcats added an extra insurance goal with 2:33 left on the clock, as Odolla beat Bridegum to a loose ball just outside the box, juked to the left and served it into the empty net, essentially clinching the win and a date in the CAC Semifinals.
The clock hit 90 minutes with Frostburg on top, 3-1. The win was the Bobcats' first win at home in the CAC tournament since 2011, they took down Wesley at Bobcat Stadium, 2-0.
