Bobcat Volleyball Suffers 3-0 Loss At Southern Virginia

BUENA VISTA, Va. – The Frostburg State volleyball team suffered a 3-0 setback at Southern Virginia, Wednesday, but the Bobcats hung tough in all three sets.
 
The Bobcats fall to 9-19 overall and 1-3 in the CAC, while the Knights improve to 12-7 and 3-1.
 
Frostburg hit .167 with 33 kills in the three sets and registered 53 digs and 32 assists.
 
Junior Ashante Corey-Bey led the team with eight kills, while classmates Biamba Tshitenge and Bailey Godlove each finished with seven.
 
Junior Katie Onyundo passed out 27 assists and junior Cori Smothers posted her fifth-straight match with 10 or more digs as she registered 18.
 
In set one, Frostburg tied the score at 10 and again at 11 following kills from Corey-Bey and Onyundo before SVU rattled off five-straight points. The hosts later added a 4-1 run to the play-by-play and scored the final two points for a 25-20 victory.
 
FSU rallied from an early deficit to grab a 9-8 lead following three-straight points. Godlove highlighted the brief outburst with a kill for the ninth point. Southern Virginia answered with a 7-1 scoring spurt and it later collected a 6-1 run for a 22-17 edge.
 
The Bobcats tried to answer with four-straight points late in the set, but Hailey Lohnes smacked a kill for SVU for the 25-23 win.
 
Frostburg was more determined in the third set leading at several points in the first few points. First-year Haley Altemus posted kills that gave Frostburg 5-3 and 6-4 advantages and Godlove smacked another kill for a 7-5 edge. Two-straight kills from Corey-Bey pushed the Bobcat lead to 11-10.
 
The Knights rallied with a 5-0 run and they never trailed again. A second 5-0 scoring jolt handed the hosts a 22-16 advantage before going on for a 25-20 win.
 
Frostburg returns to action on Saturday at St. Mary's (Md.) at noon.
