Wilson Nets Career High Against No. 10 Christopher Newport

FROSTBURG, Md. – First-year guard Kayla Wilson netted a career-high 15 points against nationally-ranked Christopher Newport University on Saturday afternoon, but the Captains proved too much for the Bobcats and defeated Frostburg 99-49.

The Bobcats' second-straight league loss dropped them to 8-9 overall and 4-6 in Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) play. CNU Improved to 15-2, 9-1 in CAC play.

Frostburg played without its leading scorer and ball handler, sophomore Victoria Diggs, and only mustered two three-point makes on a season-low six attempts.

The Bobcats' 43 turnovers on the afternoon topped the season-high total set in their first meeting with CNU.

After shooting a season-worst 18.8 percent against the Captains on December 2, Frostburg State converted 44.4 percent (20-45) of its attempts from the field compared to 43.6 percent (34-78) for CNU. After outrebounding Frostburg 62-38 in the first meeting, the Captains only held a two-rebound advantage over the Bobcats (37-35).

The Captains blitzed Frostburg in the first quarter, forcing a turnover on each of the Bobcats' first five possessions. FSU trailed 14-6 after five minutes of play with all six points scored by sophomore Sydney Stotler and classmate Amanda Emory. The Captains extended their lead to as many as 20 points in the first quarter, but Wilson's three-point play to end the frame made it a 28-11 game after ten minutes.

In the second quarter, the Bobcats reduced the CNU lead to 14 points thanks to a 7-0 run with Wilson accounting for all seven points. Sophomore Victoria Yoder saved a loose ball from going out of bounds directly to Wilson, who banked in a floater from the right side. After a CNU miss, Wilson connected on her first collegiate three-point basket on the left wing from senior Adjowa Pinkrah. On the following possession, Pinkrah's block led to Wilson crossing over a Captain defender in transition and converting on a layup.

Back-to-back three-pointers by Christopher Newport's Jasmine Norman late in the second quarter stretched the Captains' lead to 24 (49-25). Stotler dropped in a pair of layups to close the half with CNU up 49-29. The Bobcats battled to 18 points in the second quarter, the most for FSU in any quarter against CNU this season.

In the third quarter the Bobcats were held to just two field goals and were outscored 32-5 and trailed by 81-34 going into the fourth quarter. Six different Bobcats scored in a 15-point fourth quarter effort.

Stotler narrowly missed out on her second double-double of the season with 12 points and nine rebounds. Yoder chipped in five points and a season-best five assists. Pinkrah and junior Amber Downey each added four points, with Pinkrah contributing six rebounds, a block and a pair of steals. Doweny registered four rebounds and two blocks.

Frostburg State concludes its three-game CAC home stand against York (Pa.) on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. The Spartans outlasted Frostburg 61-56 in the teams' first meeting on December 6.
