FROSTBURG, Md.- First-year guard Kayla Wilson netted a career-high 18 points, but the shorthanded Frostburg State women's basketball team was unable to keep pace with Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) foe York (Pa.) as it fell 79-66 on Wednesday night in Bobcat Arena.
Frostburg (8-10, 4-7 CAC) shot 23-55 (41.8%) from the floor against York College (12-6, 8-3 CAC) while playing with just eight active players.
Heading into Wednesday night's contest, sophomore Victoria Diggs and junior Megan Kelly had accounted for 71 of the Bobcats 106 (67%) 3-point baskets on the season and with both players out of action FSU shot above its season average (30.8%) from beyond the arc, going 6 of 18 from deep (33.3%).
Wilson scored her 18 points on 6 of 14 shooting, with three three-pointers, and on 3-5 shooting from the free-throw line. It's the Laurel, Md. native's second consecutive game with double figures in scoring as she dropped 15 points against Christopher Newport on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomores Victoria Yoder and Sydney Stotler added 14 and 10 points respectively while each seeing over 30-minutes of action.
The Bobcats struggled to start the game, trailing 7-0 just two minutes in but found their rhythm and rattled off a 19-8 run over a six and a half minutes of action. Both Stotler and senior Adjowa Pinkrah posted five points during the run and a Pinkrah triple with 1:36 left in the first quarter gave the Bobcats a four point lead.
York (Pa.) regained the lead in the second frame but a late three from first-year Amiya King put the home team down by just two, 33-31, heading into halftime. King's 3-pointer was her first basket from the field in her collegiate career and insured that all eight active Bobcat players got on the score sheet in the first half.
After Frostburg scored the first four points of the second half, the visitors responded with a 29-7 run to build their largest lead of the night to 20 and led by 18 after three quarters of play.
FSU managed to trim the lead to 10 in the fourth but free-throws down the stretch from Julia Strothers and Beth Patrick sealed the victory for YCP by the final of 79-66
Frostburg looks to get back on the winning track when it travels to St. Mary's (Md.) to take on the Seahawks Saturday, January 27 with the tip scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
