FROSTBURG, Md. – Frostburg led by as many as 16 points in the first half and tied the game with just under two minutes left in regulation before suffering an 85-80 setback to Christopher Newport at Bobcat Arena, Saturday.
The Bobcats (7-10, 5-5) came out with high energy in the opening half and emerged with a 44-41 lead at intermission.
Frostburg used much of the first 10 minutes to build a double-digit lead, 22-11 and the lead swelled to 14, 29-15 with 9:07 left.
The hosts continued the surge and junior Edwin Cole hit a jumper at 5:14 as FSU led 37-21. The Captains (13-4, 7-3) closed out the half by narrowing the Bobcat deficit to three at the break, 44-41. CNU used a 7-0 to close out the opening half.
The Bobcats held on to their lead over the first four minutes of the second half until CNU's Jason Aigner hit a three-pointer for a 50-49 cushion at 15:50.
Moments later, Aigner hit a pair of three's before the midway point of the half to give the Captains' a 63-55 advantage and a 66-57 edge.
Frostburg made a late push to retake the lead with a 7-0 run that ended with 3:22 left in the second half. Cole capped the run with a layup at 3:22 that knotted things at 75-75.
Cole later hit two free throws and senior Tyler Michael knocked down a three-pointer as the Bobcats tied the game one final time at 80 with 1:47 showing.
Christopher Newport scored the final five points, while Frostburg couldn't get its final few shots to fall as the final horn.
Sophomore Lawrence Pettis, Jr. led the scoring efforts for Frostburg with 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting with three three-pointers and five assists. Michael contributed 16 points, while sophomore Daniel Alexander finished with 15.
Cole collected his fifth double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds. He also posted five blocks after posting a career-best eight blocks in the previous matchup between Frostburg and Christopher Newport this campaign.
The Captains had four players in double figures behind Aaron McFarland's 21 points. Spencer Marin and Aigner sparked the CNU bench with 14 points apiece.
The Bobcats return to action on Wednesday when they host No.4 York (Pa.) at 8:00 pm.
