FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State women's lacrosse team closed out its regular season on Saturday with a hard-fought 18-12 loss to St. Mary's.
The Bobcats settle at 6-10 overall and 3-5 in the CAC. Frostburg has earned the sixth seed in the upcoming CAC Tournament and will travel to third-seeded Mary Washington for a first round game on Tuesday (April 18) at 4:00 pm.
The win hands St. Mary's a 9-8 regular-season mark and a 5-3 slate in the CAC. The Seahawks will be the No. 4 seed in the tournament and host fifth-seeded CNU on Tuesday.
Frostburg scored back-to-back goals to grab a 6-4 advantage before the midway point of the first half. Following a St. Mary's 7-0 run to close out the first half, FSU pulled to within three goals on three occasions in the second half.
The Seahawks used back-to-back goals at 13:51 and again at 12:37 to extend their lead to five, 15-10. The two teams traded goals the rest of the way for the 18-12 final.
Senior Molly Hart scored at 19:11 in the first half before freshman Nikki Hallikas found the net less than minute later as FSU built its lead to 6-4.
The Bobcats later opened the second half with goals from senior Emani Byrd (26:13) and freshman Molly Biggers (24:58) that closed the deficit to 11-8.
At 17:45, Hallikas scored on a free position attempt that brought Frostburg to within three again at 12-9. Hallikas connected with sophomore Morgan Cavey three minutes later as the Bobcats trailed by three again, this time at 13-10.
Back-to-back goals from St. Mary's pushed its lead to 15-10 and later the Seahawks closed the contest with two goals that set the final at 18-12.
SMCM outshot the Bobcats 40-29, but the hosts held a 38-19 lead in ground balls. Hallikas paced the Bobcats with eight ground balls, while Byrd led the way with five draw controls.
Senior keeper Dylan Teitelbaum notched 10 saves on the afternoon and she surpassed 500 career saves in the game.
Hallikas also led Frostburg with seven points on two goals and five assists, while Cavey notched five goals.
Lacey Brown led the Seahawks with five goals, while Erica Kopf found the net three times and had two assists.
