Bobcats Split Non-League Tilt At Stevenson

STEVENSON, Md. – The Frostburg softball team split a non-conference twin bill at Stevenson, Tuesday afternoon. The Bobcats collected a 9-3 game-one win before suffering a 6-1 defeat in the second contest.

Following the doubleheader, the Bobcats settle at 21-11 overall, while the Mustangs improve to 6-18.

Game One
Senior Hannah Tavik put an exclamation point on game one for the Bobcats with a three-run home run to center field in the fifth inning that put the visitors ahead 9-3. Tavik's fourth homer of the season also scored fellow senior Megan Tracey along with junior Sam Gatton.

Gatton scored the first two runs of the game in the top of the second when she smacked a 1-1 pitch to left field for a single and two runs as senior Emily Zengel and junior Allison Short scored for a quick 2-0 lead.

Moments later, Tavik reached on a fielder's choice and an infield error from Stevenson scored both Gatton and Tracey for a 4-0 advantage.

In the third, FSU plated two more runs as both Tracey and Zengel scored on another infield error by the Mustangs.

The hosts scored all three of their runs in the third inning on a pair of singles and a bases loaded walk. Tiffany McKee and Morghan Fulton posted the run-producing singles.

Short got the start in the circle and tossed 6.0 innings. She scattered 11 hits and allowed just three earned runs, while picking up her fifth-straight win.

Game Two
The host Mustangs jumped out of the gate with a five-run first inning that handed them the momentum for good. Jasmyn Ogletree knocked home three runs behind a home run to left center field before McKee closed the frame with a two-run homer to center.

The Bobcats got one run back in the top of the second. Junior Brittney Platt singled to lead off the frame and later scored on a fielder's choice from senior Emily Zengel.

The final run of the contest came in the home half of the second when Naomi Fields plated a run on a ground out.

The Bobcats had several chances over the final five innings but they stranded a total of eight runners to set the final at 6-1.

Tavik suffered the loss in the circle after surrendering six runs in 2.0 inning of work. Sophomore Ali Caulkins came on for the final 4.0 innings and allowed just three hits.

Platt finished the doubleheader with four hits, while Tavik had three RBI.

Frostburg returns to action on Friday when it hosts Mary Washington at 3:00 pm.
