Softball Outlasts Mary Washington for Sweep

Bobcats host Christopher Newport for Senior Day and regular season finale tomorrow afternoon

Frostburg (23-11, 11-1) rode stellar pitching in both games to victory, holding Mary Washington (20-18, 5-7) to just one run in game two.

Game One
Junior starter Allison Short tossed another shutout and allowed just two hits for her 13th win of the season.

She struckout five Eagle batters and retired the side in the second, third, fifth and sixth innings. UMW mustered a single in both the first and seventh innings and Short walked a batter in the fourth.

It was Short's fifth shutout of the spring campaign and third in six CAC contests.

Frostburg scored the only run it needed in the third inning. Senior Jessica Dubbs walked and advanced to third on a single to center from senior Hannah Tavik. Senior Emily Harvey then laid down a sacrifice bunt that allowed Dubbs to cross home plate.

Game Two
Senior pitcher Hannah Tavik tossed a complete game where she scattered five hits and allowed one run. Tavik allowed the lone run in the first inning, but stifled the Eagles the rest of the way with nine strikeouts on the afternoon.

Frostburg plated the final two runs of the afternoon in the bottom of the first inning. Junior Sam Gatton began the inning with a leadoff single down the right field line and advanced to second when Dubbs reached on a fielder's choice.

After Gatton swiped third, Tavik helped her own cause with an RBI-single down the left field line to tie the game at one. Frostburg took a 2-1 lead after Dubbs scored on a groundout from senior Emily Harvey.

The Bobcats would not relinquish the lead and helped Tavik earn her ninth victory of the season. The Eagles looked to rally in the sixth inning with runners at first and third, but Tavik worked her way out of trouble with back-to-back strikeouts.

Up Next
Frostburg will conclude the regular season tomorrow afternoon against Christopher Newport with the hosting rights of the 2017 CAC Tournament on the line.

FSU and CNU open game one of the twin bill at 1:00 pm and the two games will serve as Senior Day for Frostburg at Bobcat Field.

Scenarios to decide which team will serve as the host of the CAC Tournament are listed below:

  1. If the Bobcats win both games, the CAC Tournament will run through Western Maryland starting on Thursday at 10:00 am.

  1. If FSU and CNU split, the first tiebreaker comes down to run differential between the Bobcats and Captains during tomorrow afternoon's doubleheader. The team with the highest run differential will earn the right to host. If the run differential can't be resolved (i.e. same number of runs) during the FSU/CNU matchup, the second tiebreaker will be determined by run differential against the rest of the conference opponents with an eight-run cap. The team with the highest run differential wins. If the run differential against the rest of the conference cannot determine the host, the final tiebreaker will be a coin flip.

  1. If Christopher Newport sweeps Frostburg, the Captains will serve as hosts of the 2017 CAC Tournament.
