Gross Nets Game Winner Against CNU

FROSTBURG, Md. – Frostburg junior Adam Gross netted the game-winning goal with 42 seconds left in regulation as the Bobcats slipped past Christopher Newport, 6-5, Saturday night at Bobcat Stadium.

Both teams seemed destined to stall inside the final 10 minutes of the fourth after the Captains (8-3, 3-1) evened the score at 5-5.

CNU opened the fourth with a goal from Will Geise that cut Frostburg's lead to 5-4 with 12:11 to play. Under two minutes later, the visitors knotted the score at five when Matthew Crist scored off a pass from Jake O'Connell.

Following Crist's goal, Bobcat keeper Jack Marks made a pair of saves inside the final 10 minutes to keep the game tied. With 2:14 to play, CNU turned the ball over and Frostburg set up its attack for the final possession.

Gross attempted a shot at 1:00 that sailed high and his second shot with 42 seconds left was initially saved by CNU keeper Matt Hayden. However, the attempt was too strong and popped out of Hayden's stick and into the goal for the game-winner.

Gross also scored the game's first goal at 8:24 and then connected with sophomore Jake Howarth for a score at 6:12 as the Bobcats led 2-0.

Christopher Newport closed out the first with a goal from Geise and it opened the second with a score from Crist that tied things at 2-2.

Junior Keegan Colegrove handed FSU a 3-2 cushion with a goal at 10:46 in the second, but the Captains answered with a scored at 6:28 that sent the game into halftime locked at three.

Gross opened the second half with a goal less than three minutes into the third quarter and senior Kyle Horak took a pass at midfield and sprinted to the net for a goal with 5:45 left that put Frostburg ahead 5-3.

Gross finished the evening with three goals and one assist to power Frostburg. Senior Chase Cullison handed out two assists, while Colegrove, Howarth and Horak each scored once.

Horak won at least 60 percent of his faceoff opportunities for the sixth-straight game as he won 11-of-15 (73.3) and he paced FSU with five ground balls. Marks finished with nine saves and he made four in the first quarter to help Frostburg keep CNU off the board.

Crist led CNU with two goals and one assist, while Geise had two goals. Hayden contributed 11 saves, while Tony Cruz won 3-of-14 faceoffs.

Frostburg travels to Southern Virginia on Wednesday at 5:00 pm.
