STEVENSON, Md. – The Frostburg State baseball team defeated Scranton, 6-4, in the Baltimore Invitational Sunday afternoon at Sugar Field.
Frostburg (6-4) scored six runs on the afternoon and tallied five of them between innings four, five and six. Scranton (3-3) mustered a run in the fourth inning, two runs in the sixth and a run in the seventh.
The Bobcats jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning. Junior Matt Bougourd singled up the middle and drove home junior Matt Jeffery for the first run of the game.
Later in the inning, junior Colton Sivic reached first on a fielder's choice, which advanced senior Brad Garrant to third base. With junior Logan Corrgian at the plate, the Bobcats pulled off a double steal where Garrant stole home and Sivic advanced to second.
After a Scranton run made the score 2-1, freshman Brady Ward led off the top of the fifth with his first career home run as a Bobcat. Ward mashed the solo shot down the right field line and made the score 3-1 FSU.
Senior JT Tipton drove in two more runs in the sixth inning with a single to right. Corrigan and Sivic scored on the play and put the Bobcats up 5-1. Tipton finished the day 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
Scranton battled back with two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh inning, making the score 5-4.
Frostburg tacked on one more run in the top of the ninth. Jeffery hit a single through the left side to plate Tipton.
Junior pitcher Daniel Richardson (1-0) had five strikeouts and earned the victory. He allowed just four hits and one earned run in five innings.
Senior Cody Harman pitched a scoreless bottom of the ninth and earned the save (1). Harman had a groundball sandwiched between two strikeouts to end the game and preserve the win.
The Bobcats are back in action tomorrow, wrapping up the Baltimore Invitational with a game against Stevenson. First pitch from Sugar Field is set for 2:30 p.m.
