VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Sophomore Ali Caulkins picked up a win in game one and senior Emily Zengel smacked a grand slam in game two as Frostburg defeated both Hunter and Buffalo State at the Beach Blast Tournament, Saturday.
Frostburg downed Hunter 9-0 in game one in 5.0 innings as Caulkins struckout four batters and surrendered just two hits.
At the plate, Frostburg drew five-straight walks to open the game and it raced out to a 7-0 lead following the first inning. Following the five walks, senior Emily Zengel and Brittney Platt posted RBI singles and Claire Hanlon later drove home Platt to cap the inning.
Frostburg added solo runs in the third and fourth innings. Hanlon scored Platt again in the third with an RBI ground out. In the fourth, senior Emily Harvey scored classmate Selina Matulonis with an RBI ground out.
Senior Jessica Dubbs and Platt both finished 2-for-2 in the opener, while Platt scored twice.
In the second game, the Bengals scored single runs in the first three innings to lead 3-1 as the contest headed for the top of the fourth inning.
Frostburg took control with six runs in both the top of the fourth and the top of the sixth innings.
In the fourth, Platt singled home Tavik and K. Catlin singled home Platt before Zengel smacked her first career grand slam that lifted the Bobcats to a 7-3 lead.
In the sixth, Zengel scored the first of six runs via an error on the Buffalo State outfield. Claire Hanlon and Brittney Platt each posted RBI singles and Kristen Catlin singled home two runs to end the frame as FSU earned a 13-3 advantage in six innings.
Zengel finished with four RBI and two runs scored, while Catlin was 2-for-3 with three RBI and Platt was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.
Short earned her second win of the season in the circle after striking out four in 6.0 innings. She allowed just one earned run and walked two.
The Bobcats return to action on Tuesday at Hood for a twinbill at 2:00 pm.
