BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Senior Hannah Tavik nearly tossed a no-hitter and junior Allison Short almost a perfect game as each allowed just one hit in Frostburg's sweep of Bridgewater, Monday.
Short allowed a hit with two outs in the bottom of the seventh as Frostburg earned a 1-0 win in game one. Short also did not allow a walk in 7.0 innings. Tavik, meanwhile, surrendered her only hit in the bottom of the fourth frame as Frostburg posted a 9-0 win in five innings in the second game.
The two shutouts now bring Frostburg's total to four on the season and it improves to 7-7 overall.
Short struckout six batters and allowed only one base runner on an infield bloop single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. She fanned at least one batter in four innings and struckout two hitters in both the third and sixth frames.
At the plate, Frostburg totaled four hits and scored its only run in the top of the seventh. Tavik singled to the shortstop and sophomore Olivia Ford came on as a pinch runner. Ford promptly stole second base and scored when senior Emily Harvey singled to center.
Harvey and Tavik, junior Sam Gatton and junior Brittney Platt each posted one hit in the win.
In game two, FSU jumped out to a big 5-0 lead after the first inning and never looked back.
Tavik stuckout a season-high nine batters, allowed just three walks and surrendered a hit in the fourth. She fanned at least one hitter in every inning and she posted two strikeouts in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings.
The Eagles used a bunt single with one out in the fourth for their only offense.
The Bobcats used four hits and took advantage of three errors in the first inning for the 5-0 cushion. Gatton singled to lead off the game and scored on an infield error, while senior Jessica Dubbs also scored on a throwing error for a 2-0 lead.
Platt later drove home Harvey with a single to center and senior Emily Zengel singled home sophomore Ali Caulkins for a 4-0 score. Senior Megan Tracey capped the frame with a two-out double that scored Platt for the fifth run.
Frostburg ended the game in the fifth inning when it tacked on four more runs. Tracey walked and Gatton singled to put two runners on for Dubbs, who tripled to right field allowing both Tracey and Gatton to cross the plate.
Tavik then doubled home Dubbs and scored the final run on a passed ball followed by an error on the Bridgewater catcher.
Dubbs was 1-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI, Gatton finished 3-for-4 with two runs, while both Platt and Tavik each registered two hits, an RBI and a run scored.
Frostburg returns to the field on Wednesday with it travels to Catholic at 3:00 pm.
