WHEELING, W.Va. – The Frostburg men's lacrosse team attempted a fourth-quarter rally after trailing by five goals following the third, but in the end the Bobcats endured a 12-10 loss to Ohio Wesleyan at Wheeling Jesuit University, Wednesday.
The Battling Bishops (5-4) closed the third quarter with three-straight goals as they built their lead to 10-5.
The Bobcats (6-4) rebounded in the fourth after they found the net with four-straight goals to open the final stanza. Junior Adam Gross opened with the fourth's first goal, before classmate Keegan Colegrove scored back-to-back goals at 12:04 and again at 11:21. Gross pulled Frostburg to within one, 10-9, with his second goal of the fourth at 10:09.
Gross had a good look at 7:36 that would have knotted the contest at 10, but his shot was turned away by OWU keeper Joey Sichnezia. At 4:13, Ohio Wesleyan added to its lead when Matt Maier scored for an 11-9 cushion. Maier scored a minute later as OWU led 12-8 with 3:08 left to play. Senior Alex Phillips found Colegrove for the game's final goal with five seconds to play.
Colegrove scored a career-high six goals to pace Frostburg's attack. Gross finished with two goals and three assists, while senior Chase Cullison added one goal and three assists. Senior Kyle Horak won 17-of-26 faceoffs and picked up seven ground balls, while freshman keeper Jack Marks notched 11 saves.
Max Tennant led the Battling Bishops with four goals, while Maier had two goals and two assists. Conor Caffrey posted one goal and two assists.
Colegrove opened the game with two first-quarter goals at 8:39 and again with five seconds left to hand FSU a 2-0 advantage after 2-0.
Ohio Wesleyan rebounded with five second-quarter goals for a 6-3 lead at intermission. Jimmy Wagner scored the lone Frostburg goal of the second with 1:24 to play in the half.
The teams traded goals to open the third before OWU's three-straight goals to cap the third.
Frostburg hosts Christopher Newport this Saturday at 6:00 pm.
