NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Frostburg State baseball team fell in a Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) doubleheader to Christopher Newport Saturday afternoon at Captains Park.
Game One
The Bobcats played Christopher Newport close for the first five innings, but the Captains pulled away, scoring nine unanswered runs to earn a 15-4 victory. Frostburg scored its four runs on 12 hits and three errors, while CNU scored its 15 runs on 20 hits and one error.
After Christopher Newport opened the scoring in the bottom of the second, the Bobcats answered back in the top of the third, as senior JT Tipton doubled down the left field line to score junior Jesse Lee and knot the game at one.
The Captains tacked on one more run in the bottom of the third, but Frostburg would scratch two runs across in the top of the fourth to take the lead. Junior Matt Bougourd laced a double down the left field line to score junior Matt Jeffery and move senior Brad Garrant to third. The next batter, junior Colton Sivic grounded into a fielder's choice that scored Garrant to give the Bobcats the 3-2 advantage.
Christopher Newport put together a big bottom of the fourth to take the lead back, 6-3. Frostburg would push one more run across in the top of the fifth on a Garrant RBI single that scored Tipton.
Tipton and Jeffery led the way for the Bobcats with two hits each.
Junior Logan Corrigan (1-1) threw 4.1 innings and was tagged with the loss.
Game Two
Frostburg (8-7, 1-3) could not break through offensively in a 5-0 loss. The Bobcats finished the day with six hits, while Christopher Newport (15-9, 5-0) scored its five runs on two homers.
Junior pitcher Greg Schneider tossed a six-inning gem, allowing just three hits with four strikeouts.
After both teams were held scoreless through six innings, Christopher Newport tallied the game's first run with a home run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Bobcats looked to tie the game in the top of the eighth, but were unable to drive home junior Kyle Burger, who stole second after reaching on a fielder's choice.
The Captains put the game away in the bottom half of the frame with a grand slam, extending their lead to 5-0.
Junior Tyler Hoffman (1-1) was given the loss after allowing two earned runs in one inning of relief.
Junior Evan Colon finished with two hits, while Jeffery, Garrant, Bougourd and senior Cody Harman had one hit each.
