HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – Despite jumping out to an early 2-0 lead, the Frostburg State baseball team dropped a narrow 4-3 decision to Hampden-Sydney Sunday afternoon at Ty Cobb Ballpark.
The loss drops Frostburg to 8-8 on the season. Meanwhile, the Tigers improve to 12-7 overall.
Frostburg took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning when senior Brad Garrant smacked a double and scored junior Matt Bougourd.
The Bobcats doubled their lead in the top of the sixth inning. Junior Logan Corrigan hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score junior Colton Sivic and put the Bobcats up 2-0.
Hampden-Sydney responded with a four-run bottom of the sixth inning, giving the Tigers a 4-2 lead.
Frostburg trimmed the Tiger lead to one run in the top of the eighth inning as senior JT Tipton singled home senior Cody Harman, making the score 4-3.
Harman fninished the afternoon with three hits, while Tipton, Bougourd and Garrant had two hits each.
Junior starter Ryan Callahan (0-2) suffered the loss after tossing 5.1 innings. He allowed seven hits, but notched three strikeouts and held the Tigers scoreless through five innings.
Juniors Mike Takovich and Lane Ward combined for 2.2 innings of scoreless relief. Takovich finished with two strikeouts in 1.2 innings, while Ward struck out one batter in one inning. Overall, the Bobcats held Hampden-Sydney scoreless in eight of nine innings.
Frostburg will return to action tomorrow against Southern Virginia. First pitch from Rockbridge County High School is slated for 4:00 p.m.
