FROSTBURG, Md. – Five players scored in double figures and Frostburg scored 43 points in each half as it rolled to a comfortable 86-62 win over Southern Virginia, Wednesday.
The Bobcats, winners of two-straight, shot 47.9 percent from the floor and connected on eight three-pointers on the evening. Frostburg improved to 6-16 overall on the season and 5-10 in the league, while the Knights fell to 4-18 and 2-13.
Junior Tyler Michael led FSU in scoring with 16 points to go along with six assists. Sophomore Edwin Cole finished with 13 points and eight rebounds, while Daniel Alexander had 10.
Frostburg also received a strong effort from its bench as freshman Rhashad Johnson was second on the team with 15 points as junior Dalton Gaus scored 12.
Other than a tie game at 8-8 in the first half, Frostburg led throughout and built its lead in the first to 10 points, 31-21, with 3:38 to play. It was a Johnson three-pointer at 3:38 and the Bobcats closed out the half with two more threes.
Michael hit a three-pointer with 16 seconds left and Gaus hit a running three-pointer from just over midcourt to give Frostburg a 43-23 advantage at the half.
Midway through the second half, Frostburg used an 8-0 run over two minutes to stretch its lead to a game-high 29, 70-41. Junior Christopher Coston thundered home a two-handed dunk from the baseline to start the run.
Frostburg held its lead around 25 points the rest of the game. Gaus and freshman Dexter Pelap capped the scoring for Frostburg. Gaus hit a three-pointer with 1:21 to play and Pelap made a layup with seven seconds showing for the 86-62 final.
Rashay Douglas led the Knights in scoring with 12 points, followed by Chris Richardson with 11.
FSU returns to the court on Saturday at St. Mary's at 4:00 pm.
