ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – It was a tale of two halves for the Frostburg State men's basketball team in a 75-70 loss at St. Mary's (Md.), Saturday.
Over the first nine minutes of the first half, the Bobcats (6-17, 5-11) raced out of the gate to a 17-2 lead. At 7:42, freshman Lawrence Pettis, Jr. hit a three-pointer as FSU led by 16 before junior Christopher Coston hit a layup at 4:47 as Frostburg grabbed its largest lead of the half at 19, 34-15
The Bobcats headed into the locker room up 41-28 after shooting almost 60 percent from the field.
In the second half, the Seahawks (12-11, 7-9) rebounded by outscoring Frostburg, 47-29. After making just nine baskets in the first half, St. Mary's made 17 in the second half.
Bobcat junior Tyler Michael hit the first basket of the second and Coston followed a minute later with a layup as Frostburg increased its lead to 17, 45-28. Moments later, Michael hit a three-pointer for a 48—33 advantage.
The Seahawks narrowed their deficit to single digits with a quick 7-0 run as the scoreboard read 48-40. Freshman Daniel Alexander hit a layup with 12:50 left that pushed FSU's lead back to 11, 53-42.
St. Mary's collected another run, this time 13-2, and tied the ballgame at 55 with 8:36 showing. Pettis, Jr. hit back-to-back three-pointers that tied things at 59 (5:42) and then gave the visitors a 62-59 edge (4:43).
Michael handed Frostburg a five-point cushion with 3:25 to play with a free throw and jumped, but another 7-0 run, handed the Seahawks a 67-65 lead with 2:01 left in regulation.
Sophomore Edwin Cole hit a dunk with under two minutes left to knot things at 67 all. From there, St. Mary's slowly increased its lead over the final 1:31 and led by as many as seven with five seconds left.
Michael capped the game's scoring with a layup with no time left on the final clock.
Michael led all players with 24 points on 10-of-20 shooting. Cole finished with a double-double 11 points and 13 rebounds, while Alexander rounded out the starters in double figures with 13. Pettis, Jr. came off the bench to score 10.
Chris Craft, Jr. led St. Mary's with 13 points, while Ochae Bynum scored 11. The Seahawks' bench players scored 34 of the team's 75 points.
The Bobcats travel to York (Pa.) this Wednesday at 8:00 pm.
