Bobcats Drop Opener At #17 Ursinus

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Junior Keegan Colegrove scored three goals and freshman Jack Marks notched eight saves in his collegiate debut, but the Frostburg men's lacrosse team opened the 2017 season on Saturday with a close 10-8 loss at No. 17 Ursinus.

The Bobcats, receiving votes in the USILA Preseason Poll, trailed 5-1 after the first quarter and couldn't pull even with the host Bears over the final three frames.

Ursinus (1-0) opened the third-quarter scoring when Gerard Brown scored an unassisted tally at 8:16 for a 9-4 lead.

The Bobcats (0-1) answered by scoring four of the game's next five goals to pull within two, 10-8.

Junior Quinn Western scored a minute after Brown's goal and a minute after that, Colegrove connected on a shot that pulled FSU to within 9-6.

Tim Miller scored for Urisnus late in the third quarter, but Frostburg again answered with two goals early in the fourth. Freshman Jake Bowling found the net at 13:17 and junior Nate Collins scored at 12:37 as the scoreboard read 10-8.

A minute later, Frostburg had the first of several opportunities to further close the gap, but a shot from Collins' was saved by UC keeper Elliot Shevitz.

Senior John Gamber forced a Bear turnover at 10:04 that led to a freshman Paul Ruppert shot at 9:57 that hit the crossbar. Frostburg ripped four-straight shots after Ruppert's, including a shot from Collins that hit the post at 9:17. Freshman Jake Bowling had another great scoring chance stopped by Shevitz at 8:52.

Over the final 7:25, Frostburg posted nine shots and Shevitz made six saves to keep Urisnus' lead at two. The Bobcats outshot the Bears 18-4 in the fourth quarter and Ruppert's shot at 9:57 was originally ruled a goal, but was overturned by the officials after a conference on the field.

Western finished with one goal and one assist, while Bowling also contributed a goal and an assist. Nick Pontorno, Collins and Gross each scored for the Bobcats who owned a 49-30 advantage in shots. The Bobcats also forced 20 turnovers and senior Kyle Horak won 50 percent of his face offs (9-of-18).

Brown led Ursinus with two goals and three assists, while Bobby McClure had one goal and three assists. Shevitz notched 15 saves and did his part to keep Frostburg from pulling any closer than two goals.

The Bobcats return to action next Saturday at Franklin & Marshall at 1:00 pm.
