NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The second-seeded Frostburg State women's soccer team could not muster much on the offensive side of the ball in a 4-0 loss to No. 8 and top-seeded Christopher Newport in the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Championship game Saturday night.
The Bobcats traveled to face CNU in the conference championship for the second-straight season after a thrilling 1-0 victory over Salisbury in the CAC Semifinals on November 1.
Frostburg (9-8-2) held the high-powered and unrelenting Christopher Newport (18-0-1) attack at bay for much of the first half before the hosts picked up the pressure in the waning moments.
Alex Miller notched the first goal of the contest for the Captains in the 41
st minute to give the defending conference champions a 1-0 edge.
The Captains hit their stride offensively in the second half with three tallies to take a 4-0 lead and put the game out of reach.
Offensively, the Bobcats had two shots on goal and two corners. Junior forward Danielle Ferris had the first shot on goal for the Bobcats in the 61
st minute but was turned away by Captains' keeper Carly Maglio.
Sophomore forward Brooke Shehade, the leading scorer for the Bobcats, broke free for a shot in the 85
th minute that was corralled by backup keeper Maddy Belanger.
Frostburg relied heavily on junior goalkeeper Emily Faust, who matched a career-high 11 saves on the evening.
The Bobcat women's team now awaits an announcement for a potential bid into the ECAC Tournament, which will come Monday afternoon.
