CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Frostburg State men's basketball team held a three-point lead with just under eight minutes left in the game, but Montclair State used a late run and held on for a narrow 84-82 win over the Bobcats Saturday afternoon in the championship game of the Stephanie Tubbs Jones Memorial Tournament at Case Western Reserve.
Frostburg (1-1) shot 47.6% (30-of-63) from the floor and held a 44-40 lead at the half. Montclair State (2-0) finished the afternoon 44.4% (28-of-63) from the field and held a 46-33 edge on the glass.
Frostburg and Montclair State went back-and-forth for much of the afternoon in a contest that featured 12 ties and 24 total lead changes.
A trio of Bobcats scored in double-figures, with senior guard Tyler Michael posting a game-high 25 points. Sophomore guard Daniel Alexander poured in a career-high 20 points while sophomore guard Lawrence Pettis, Jr. finished with 10 points.
Pettis also registered a game-high five assists and three steals in 33 minutes of action.
Alexander added six rebounds, four assists and a steal while senior forward Christopher Coston added six points.
Frostburg opened up a five-point edge (43-38) in the first half and later went up six (54-48) with a three-pointer by Pettis with 15:22 left in the second half.
Michael converted a jumper at 7:41 to put the Bobcats up 68-65, but the Redhawks regained the lead with a layup at 6:52.
Senior guard Dalton Gaus hit a three with less than one minute remaining to give the Bobcats an 82-81 lead before the Redhawks iced the contest at the foul line.
Frostburg returns to the court for its home-opener on Tuesday, November 21 against Marietta at 7:00 p.m.
