FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State men's basketball team was up to the task but could not overcome a second half surge from 13
th-ranked Marietta in a 91-77 loss Tuesday night at Bobcat Arena.
Frostburg (1-2) shot 39.4% from the floor and had four players finish the night in double-figures. Marietta (3-0) shot a blistering 70% (21-of-30) in the second half and turned a two point halftime deficit into a 14-point victory.
The hot-shooting Pioneers used a balanced scoring attack with five players in double-figures, led by Dillon Young's game-high 20 points.
Senior Tyler Michael led the way for Frostburg with 18 points, 14 of which came in the first half. Michael finished the night 6-of-12 from the floor and 5-of-6 from the foul line.
Senior Darren Campbell and sophomore Daniel Alexander poured in 16 points each while junior Edwin Cole notched 11 points.
Overall, seven players scored at least one point for the Bobcats. The Bobcats were outrebounded 48-33 and surrendered 15 second-chance points.
Frostburg opened up a 7-0 edge to begin the game and later rallied from a nine-point deficit for a five-point lead (42-37) with just over two minutes showing on the first half clock. Michael converted a three and a layup in the Bobcats initial scoring spurt and Alexander hit a pair of layups to build the Bobcats advantage in the latter stages of the first half.
The Bobcats held a 46-44 edge at the break but the visitors responded with a 7-2 scoring run to begin the second half. Senior Dalton Gaus drilled a three with 13:54 left in the second half to bring the hosts to within three (58-55) but the Pioneers responded with a 19-4 run to build a double-digit cushion.
Gaus finished with seven points and added five rebounds in 30 minutes of action.
The Bobcats are back in action on Sunday for a non-conference road matchup at Washington (Md.) at 2:00 p.m. Frostburg begins Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) play the following Wednesday at home against Penn State Harrisburg at 8:00 p.m.
