Women’s Soccer Advances to ECAC Quarterfinal

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State women's soccer team defeated Westminster 2-1 Saturday afternoon in the opening round of the 2017 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Women's Soccer Championship.

With the win, the Bobcats improve to 10-8-2 on the year and will face Grove City in the quarterfinals Sunday at 12:00 p.m. at Bobcat Stadium.

Frostburg generated a total of 21 shots for the game, while Westminster was only able to muster 11. Of the Bobcats' 21 shots 15, were on goal.

Frostburg's first scoring chance came from sophomore Brooke Shehade in the 2nd minute as she ripped a shot outside of the 18-yard box that hit off the crossbar.

Five minutes later, senior Melanie Bell received a through ball from Shehade at point blank range in front of the goal, but Westminster's goalkeeper Laura Page was there to make the save.

At 19:27, junior Hailey Turney took a shot that bounced off the keeper and junior Melissa Krofcheck was there to put it in the back of the net for her first goal of the year that gave the Bobcats a 1-0 lead.

Frostburg would maintain a 1-0 lead at intermission.

The Bobcats' second goal of the day came from first-year Emily Lehman at 71:52 as Westminster's Page mishandled a cross and left a wide open goal for Lehman to score her first career goal as a Bobcat that gave Frostburg a 2-0 advantage.

With 10 minutes to go, Westminster's Keely Birsic hit a right-footed shot from the left side that was just out of junior goalkeeper Emily Faust's reach that found the back of the goal to cut the Bobcat lead to one.

Faust made a tremendous save in the 84th minute as Westminster's Jocelyn Gillette hit a shot towards the upper right corner, but Faust stretched out to knock the ball away.

Faust finished the game with seven saves.
