NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Frostburg State volleyball team dropped its second-straight CAC match with a 3-0 defeat at No. 23 Christopher Newport, Saturday afternoon.
The Bobcats struggled with the nationally-ranked Captains and FSU settles at 15-10 overall and 3-4 in the league.
CNU won for the 10
th-straight match and improves its record to 22-3 and 7-0.
First-year Gianna Carmona led Frostburg at the net with a team-high six kills, while seniors Madelyn Torres and Naya Cheatem, along with sophomore Biamba Tshitenge each had four.
Torres finished with double-digit assists for the 25
th time this fall as she posted 15 to go along with six digs. Senior Lindsey Scepura led posted a game-high 21 digs.
Frostburg jumped out to a quick 3-0 cushion in the first set before the hosts rebounded and broke an 8-8 tie for an 11-8 edge. CNU closed out the first game with five of the final six points for a 25-14 victory.
The second set opened in a back-and-forth fashion as neither team took control early until the Captains captured a quick run for a 10-5 lead. CNU held onto its lead for the remainder of the set and closed out game two with four of the final five points for the 25-18 win.
Christopher Newport opened the second stanza with a quick burst for a 5-1 lead. Torres registered a kill off a feed from senior Karli Grimes that pulled Frostburg to within one at 10-9. However, Christopher Newport scored seven of the next nine points for a 17-10 advantage. The hosts continued their surge for a 25-17 win.
The Bobcats return to the court next Friday night when they travel to Marymount (Va.) at 7:00 pm.
