ARLINGTON, Va. – The Frostburg State volleyball team dropped a five-set marathon to Marymount, 3-2, on Friday despite a fierce rally after falling behind 2-0.
The Bobcats (15-11, 3-5) trailed by two after the Saints (13-12, 4-4) powered their way to 25-15 and 25-21 wins.
Frostburg quickly rebounded in the third and fourth sets to knot things at two. FSU used a pair of late 3-0 runs and took advantage of 10 MU errors in the third game for a 25-19 win. Frostburg hit .344 with a match-high 15 kills to earn a 25-19 game four win.
The fifth and decisive set was arguably the closest of the evening as the two schools traded the lead five times before Marymount jumped out to an 8-5 lead. Blocks by sophomore Biamba Tshitenge and senior Naya Cheateam and a kill from Cheatem moments later brought Frostburg to within three points late in the set.
The Saints closed out the evening with three-straight points for a 15-11 win.
The loss eliminates Frostburg from CAC Tournament contention and the Bobcats will now await the ECAC Tournament on Nov. 8, 11-12. The announcement for the ECAC Tournament will be on Monday, Nov. 6.
Cheatem led both teams with 19 kills, the most in a match for her since before the Bobcats entered league play. Tshitenge added eight kills and a match-high five blocks, while senior Zoe Harris had six kills and two service aces.
Senior Madelyn Torres handed out 34 assists, while senior Lindsey Scepura and sophomore Cori Smothers tied for the team-lead with 20 digs.
Marymount's Maggie Viniard was responsible for 46 assists, while Caroline Hanson, Mykael Johnson and Alexa Marcum each posted over 10 kills.
The Saints posted 16 and 17 kills, respectively, over the first two games as they surged ahead 2-0. The hosts jumped out to an 11-4 lead and never looked back in the first game and later led 21-12 before taking the 25-15 victory.
Frostburg assumed a 4-1 lead early in the second set and kept the score close as Marymount later tried to pull away. Tshitenge and Torres blocked an attack to knot things at 14 and Tshitenge smacked a kill that tied the game at 15.
The Saints broadened its lead to 22-17 behind a 4-0 scoring spurt and they later sealed the win with a kill and a service ace for the final two points.
The Bobcats wrap up their regular season tomorrow at St. Mary's (Md.) at 2:00 pm.
