FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State women's basketball team fell to sixth-ranked Christopher Newport, 73-62, in Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) play Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Arena.
Frostburg (6-11, 4-6) outscored Christopher Newport (17-0, 10-0) 38-33 in the second half, but committed 25 turnovers on the afternoon.
The Bobcats shot 27-of-54 (50%) from the field, while Christopher Newport finished 27-of-67 (40.3%) from the floor.
Frostburg had three players reach double figures in scoring, led by senior Kirsten Rayner, who notched a team-high 15 points. Rayner finished the day 7-of-12 (58.3%) from the floor and added six rebounds, three steals and one block.
Freshman Sydney Stotler and junior Sharyce Warren stuffed the stat sheet with 14 points each for the Bobcats. Warren also had three rebounds, two assists and two steals, while Stotler notched six rebounds, four blocks, three steals and two assists.
Frostburg totaled 18 assists on the afternoon, compared to the Captains' 17.
The Bobcats jumped out to an early 5-2 lead with a three-pointer from sophomore Megan Kelly and a layup from Rayner.
With the score tied at seven, CNU used an 11-0 scoring run in the first quarter to build a double-digit cushion they maintained for much of the contest.
Frostburg would rally from a double-digit deficit in the fourth quarter and cut the CNU lead to six points, after back-to-back three-pointers from Warren made the score 52-46.
Frostburg will continue a stretch of home games and return to the court on Wednesday, January 25 to host Marymount (Va.) in CAC play. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
