FROSTBURG, Md. – Junior guard Sharyce Warren poured in a team-high 18 points as the Frostburg State women's basketball team earned a 52-42 victory over Marymount (Va.) in Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) play Wednesday night at Bobcat Arena.
Frostburg (7-11, 5-6) held Marymount (14-4, 8-3) to a season-low 42 points, limiting the Saints to 14-of-47 (29.8%) from the field and 1-of-18 (5.6%) from three-point range. The stifling Bobcat defense also did not allow Marymount to convert a three-pointer in the second half, holding the Saints to 0-for-10 from beyond the arc.
The Bobcats finished the night shooting 20-of-52 (38.5%) from the field and 6-of-14 (42.9%) from three-point range.
Warren's 18 points marked her 11
th-career double figure scoring game in a Bobcat uniform. She went 7-for-11 (63.6%) from the field and added two rebounds, four assists and a career-high eight steals.
Senior forward Kirsten Rayner notched 13 points, five rebounds and one assist. Sophomore guard Victoria Diggs had nine points, with all of them coming from three-point range. Freshman forward Amanda Emory finished with six points, senior guard Kache Fields had five points and junior guard Adjowa Pinkrah scored two points on the night.
Both teams struggled offensively out of the gate, scoring a combined 12 points in the first quarter. The first Bobcat basket came with 4:24 left in the first quarter after Diggs knocked down a three-pointer. Rayner scored a layup about 40 seconds later to give the Bobcats a 5-3 lead.
The Bobcats used a 7-0 scoring run early in the second quarter and took a 22-15 lead at the half. Warren converted a jumper followed by a three-pointer from Diggs. Emory capped the run with a layup and foul shot to make the score 15-8 with 6:40 remaining in the half.
The Bobcats led 34-28 after the third quarter and would open up a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter. The Bobcats made the score 48-36, extending their lead to the largest of the night, on a layup from Warren with 3:07 remaining in the game.
The Bobcats will conclude their three-game homestand at Bobcat Arena on Saturday, January 28 against Wesley. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
